So for Christmas I got the boxed American Gothic DVD set. It was a short-lived horror show from 1995 that both my wife and I really liked when it originally aired-I haven't seen it since. We watched the first two episodes last night and I thought it has aged quite well; it was effectively creepy. It was perhaps best known for its producers: Shaun Cassidy and Sam Raimi. We'll always remember it as the show that gave us our son's name Caleb. Lucas Black, the kid from Sling Blade, portrayed him and Michele thought he was the cutest thing in the world so we determined that if we had a son...

I remember that series, I liked it as well but it never got a chance to really mature into something great.

Lucas Black, just saw him in "Legion" (don't bother, it is horrible) he is all grown up now.

Yeah I seem to recall it getting pressure for content and then it became obvious that it was doomed to a single season. The boxed set contains the final four episodes that were previously unaired and according to Cassidy's commentary for the pilot he managed to provide an ending of sorts. As we were watching it, I realized I hardly remember any specifics about the show and have zero recollection as to where it left me hanging.

I've heard that about Legion(which is too bad because I thought it looked promising)and I've seen Black in Jarhead and All The Pretty Horses and thought it was pretty decent in both. I thought he was a great child actor.

Never saw American Gothic but I've read the book (not sure wether that came before the TV series or after) and my wife and eldest daughter were addicts when it was on. But that may just be because they lusted after the star! (whose name I can't think of just now) I probably ought to get it on DVD.

I was very let down by Legion too. Paul Bethany was good, Dennis Quaid was good, everyone else was acceptable, the filming was good but the plot was just dire! Shame.

Well, I've never seen one do THAT before

Yeah I agree Bethany was good in Legion, he is generally pretty strong in whatever he is in, but I would have to argue that Quaid was good in it, I thought he looked like he was sleepwalking his way through it. But..yeah plot was really really bad.Big Grin

I loved American gothic,

I got the U.S. dvd set, but later got the German one too as this has the episodes in the correct running order.

I read the Prequel Novel "Family", Very disapointing, turns out buck gets his powers from some glowing stones at the end of the garden :out:

I didn't realize that there was a prequel novel or that I was watching them out of order. Glowing stones does sound weak-I thought he was a ranking officer from HELL.

Gary Cole, who you all remember as Mr. Lumbergh from Office Space.

I don't know how I remember that, though. 1995 I was 18 and I probably only saw half an episode. Hey, was that the one with the serial bather who got electrocuted by a random current while in someone's tub? No wait, that was Picket Fences, with Tom Skerritt. I saw 2 episodes of that.

They passed an old woman who was just opening the door of a brown Cadillac. An old man was already sitting in the passenger seat. The car had a personalized plate with the letters “J-U-S-P-R-A-Y”.
“That stuff work?” Israel said to her.
“‘Scuse me?” the little old woman said, clutching her keys.
“The spray. Does it keep them away?”
“Keep who away?” She looked confused.
“I gotcha.” Israel gave her a conspiratorial wink.

He was the best part of the show.

I didn't know that was why it was canceled, but I do remember the previews playing up the, "Is he Satan or what?" angle. That kind of puts me in mind of the short-lived "Cursed" show on NBC about a guy whose every relationship was doomed because a gypsy had placed a curse on him. In a scramble to save the show it quickly evolved into the "Steven Webber Show" dropping the whole premise of the thing.

Hey, wasn't there also a show about a semi-lusty priest on NBC or something like that? I remember there being an uproar over that too. NBC was steadfast in their support until they weren't.
