Wishbone Wrote:Thanks for the welcomes and the suggestions. I am currently reading Koontz's Frankenstein series in between Jack novels so I will throw that one into the ring because i am enjoying the hell out of it. And speaking of Koontz, the Odd Thomas series is great as well.

Welome, Wishbone!

Are you familiar with Andrew Vachss' BURKE series? Good stuff. Burke is a lot like Jack (though without Jack's sweet and forgiving nature.) Give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Wishbone Wrote:Well since you are open to a suggestions, I am going to recommend Louis L'Amour Sackett Series. Start with Sackett's Land: The Sacketts. While the western genre is a 180 from scifi/horror, you'll find characters with no official identity and a strong sense of honor who often find that they have to break the law to do what is right.

I only suggested the Sacketts because you seemed to be looking for a series. He also has 6 or 7 volumes of short stories and about 50 or 60 novels. My personal favorite character is Chick Bowdrie who appears in Bowdrie and Bowdrie's Law. He is a Texas Ranger who has an outlaw past. He was recruited by the Rangers because the didn't want to fight him.

Delve into L'Amour and let me know what you think.

Best.

I've been here a while and I'll tell you this... L'Amour is a tough sell around here. (Unless you're talking to meSmile) Finally... FINALLY... someone's in my corner!!!!Big Grin

Welcome to the board!

Needless to say, I approve of the the Sackett saga. (It extends from pirates to woolly mammoths, to hidden gold, too Logan Sackett that is perhaps the best outlaw in existence.)

Hey now, just because I didn't read The Sacketts doesn't mean I haven't read any L'Amour. I haven't read westerns in years but Louis was my favorite when I was. Hondo, Flint, Showdown at Yellow Butte, The First Fast Draw are titles that I remember off the top of my head and I did read the first couple of Scaketts but they really weren't westerns at all-not bad but not westerns.

HA! I knew L'Amour would be a tough sell but I figured I'd throw it out there and see what the reaction was. I always hated westerns as a kid- I was more of a Monster Week on the 4:30 Movie kind of guy, but I am thankful I discovered L'Amour because he is truly one greatest writers to come out of America and I was hoping to open that door for someone else.

The Jack Reacher series is fantastic. Ive had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Child and sharing adult beverages with him and he is just a great guy, has a ton of knowledge about seemingly everything, and generally just fun to be around.

Barry Eisler has a series about a half japanese, half american assassin called John Rain, and the books are all great reads.

The Pendergast novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln ChILD are also fun reads.

longbowhunter Wrote:I highly reccommend Guilermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogans Strain Trilogy..of which the first two books have already been released. Just finished the second one,THE FALL,last night and...wow.

I seem to be alone in struggling with the strain, I loved the idea and the start of the book, but I just got bored and never managed to finish it

Re series to read try Preston & Child.

Also I second the Neil Gaiman recommendation, tho' I prefer his graphic novel work to his books.

Oh and welcome aboard

I echo the comments on Lee Child's Jack Reacher series...great stuff. I would also suggest Steve Berry's books featuring the Cotton Malone character (Federal agent/lawyer turned bookseller...c'mon...that's got to be good!). Also a fan of Neil Gaiman's darker books (American Gods, Neverwhere) but not so much on the lighter stuff (Anansi Boys, The Graveyard Book), with the exception of Good Omens (hilarious book).

Ok. When i finish with RMJ I will move on to Jack Reacher. Is the series chronological? If so, with which book should i begin? Thank you.
