Author J.A. Konrath (a.k.a. Jack Kilborn) had a very detailed post about this very subject on his blog just the other day: http://jakonrath.blogspot.com/2010/09/eb...icing.html

Amazingly detailed post. Quite clearly explains a great many things about the "publishing world" I have long thought might be the case.

Well worth the read.

He makes some pretty bold statements about intellectual properties, copy right material, DRM and the digital world that I would not have necessarily thought an author world make - all of which I completely agree with.

If you are using the 2007 version of MS Office (or if you just have a stand alone version Word 2007), you can download a free add-on to Word from Microsoft that allows you to convert any .doc/.docx to .pdf.

If you are using the 2010 version of MS Office (or if you just have a stand alone version Word 2010), you can convert any .doc/.docx to .pdf (it's now a built-in feature of Word 2010 to convert to many different formats from within word). I have MS Office 2010 Pro Plus, so this is the method I use to convert my .doc/.docx files.

I really don't convert from .doc/.docx to .mobi to use on my Kindle that much, but the rare time I do, I convert to .pdf, then use Calibre to convert to .mobi.

I am certain that others who do the above more regularly, probably have a better way of doing it.

There is a very similar discussion we are having about .pdf/epub/.mobi format conversion under the thread title "What On Earth?" under in this forum section. Start with page 3 of that thread. Lots of great posts/information/format conversion suggestions there too.

How do I load and read my epub files to my Kindle?

I was going to ask the same question. I am going to research it a little tonight and maybe tomorrow, maybe some trial and error and see what I can come up with.

Here's a good article about e-book conversion etc

This article and the Calibre FAQs section explains how to get your converted e-book to your reader (Sony, Kindle, Nook etc).

It's not the conversion so much. I have and use calibre, its how I load them. I've been hunting for a clue across the whole interweb and nothing.

I don't have a Kindle only the iPad app but I don't believe that the kindle reads epub format. It uses a version of the older Mobi pocket format. You would have to have the file converted to that format for the Kindle to recognize it.

I use a program called "PackRat" to do the moving process. I am not at home as I type this and I don't remember the website I downloaded it from. "PackRat" has been around for some time and I assume it is still available for use.

It is an open-source program and free. There was some "legal rumblings" from Amazon a while back about "proprietary rights", "DRM issues" etc against "PackRat" but not sure what happened with that. I assume they didn't buckle under Mother Amazon's threats and legal dances.

It uses the "WhisperSync" subset and the Amazon/Kindle feature of keeping a back-up of your Kindle's library at either your Amazon Kindle account (i.e. your library back up is online) or on your PC and adds new content thru these sets without deleting any portion of your library.

Very similar process that "CTM" does for your iPod/iPhone/iPad. "CTM" allows you to add/remove content (video/apps/songs/podcasts etc) to any device at anytime without using iTunes, thus no "syncing" takes place and no overwriting happens. All on a NON jailbroken pod/phone or pad. Cool.

Correct. Kindle's use the .mobi format, but as we have been discussing in this thread an another on the forum, there are a wealth of free conversion programs that will get the job done for you. Most notable "Calibre" (my personal fav, btw) and "Stanza", among others.
