I'm sure you're right. I'm just wondering if there is something more to it as well. Looking back, eyes and mirrors are major thematic elements in the story. Makes me think of the old saying, "eyes are the mirrors to the soul." Now I'm going to have to go do some research on that expression...

Also noticed last night that there are mirrors all over the Swan hatch tunnels that are used with the periscope-like thingy down there to see what's coming.

They're everywhere! Mirrors in the Lighthouse...the Looking Glass...

Now that it's mentioned, there are a lot of mirrors around the characters. Maybe they are soul searching, but I think it's more than that now.

Now, I've been speculating. Have you ever caught something out of the corner of your eye when you look in a mirror? When you move your gaze, it's gone and you feel you've lost something that bothers you now. I could be wrong, but it's like they are trying to get to that missing thing in the mirror.

This season, Jack was the first to look into a mirror. He decidedly looked like he was questioning what he saw. This was on the sideways version of Oceanic 815. He found a small cut on his neck and seemed confused about it, how did it get there? Of course, that scene immediately followed the nuclear blast, so a tiny cut seems a small price to pay for surviving a nuclear blast. 'Cept Jack can't quite remember that nuclear blast. Gotta love this show.

Some musings on the Man in Black and the Man in White, good vs bad, the scale, the Island and Earth....

Widmore warned the real Locke that a war was coming to the Island, and if Locke didn't return to the Island, the wrong side would win.

At first glance that sounds like Widmore was on Locke's side, the side of the Island protectors. But somehow I think Widmore knew that Locke would die and that the result of Locke's dead body returning to the Island would give the MIB/smoke monster a new and groovy vehicle for his bodily manifestations.

Now we have Widmore setting up sonic fences to keep out the MIB. Widmore probably knows that Jacob is dead. He seems to know everything about the Island. So, with whom is Widmore preparing to do battle? The MIB? Seems so. The Candidates? Most likely. Ben? Most definitely. The outcome that Widmore seeks? Total control of the Island, without interference from Jacob, the MIB, Jacob's clones, Ben, or anyone else. Will he achieve it? I doubt it.

The bigger battle is for the soul of the Earth. The scale, as image and metaphor, is important. We saw one in Jacob's cave with a black and a white stone on it. The Japanese leader of the Temple talked to Sayid about the scale that measures darkness within a man. At this time, as I see it, the scale seems nearly even, perhaps with a little tip towards the Light, the White, Goodness, if you will. With free will always in play.

With Jacob gone, the balance of the scale is in question, and with it, the spirit of the Earth. If it tips towards the Dark Side, Earth will be in for a hell of a time, with people's worst sides showing everywhere (free will is always in play). I imagine that would happen if the MIB were to leave the Island, which is why the forces of good (Isabella, for instance) are entreating the Candidates to not let the MIB off the Island.

So, the Island is the mechanism by which good and bad are kept in balance on this planet. That's what I've come to thusfar.

 Desmond WAS on the sub! Although he didn't look like a willing passenger...

So, if Desmond (who is "special" where time travel is concerned) is Widmore's "secret weapon", I wonder what it is that Widmore thinks or knows Desmond can do? Hmmm....

Very interesting and it does feel like you're at least close to the truth.

I've got to watch tonight's episode again and think on it some more, but for now I have just one theory to put out there. I think the candidate that will replace Jacob is Kwon. Jin, Sun, or both, I don't know yet but I bet it will be Kwon. Why?

42, of course. :p

I knew as soon as I saw the locked and protected door on the sub that dear old Desmond would be making an appearance soon, seemingly against his will.

Desmond is special. "The rules don't apply to you," was Daniel Farraday's statement to Desmond. Because we were so focused at that time on time travel, it seemed to refer solely to Desmond's facility with time. However, on this show, it could also be that "the rules" could mean something bigger, something including time travel but perhaps not limited to that. I've always felt that Desmond was key to the Island, perhaps THE key.

If they didn't have their little baby girl, I might agree. But with a life on the outside, and with their marital relationship playing so large in the LOST scenario, I have to think they will get off the Island to resume a happy life together with their girl.

On the other hand, we had the flash sideways this week showing an unmarried Jin and Sun with Sun in danger of losing her baby. So what does that mean?

Actually, I'd love to know exactly WHAT the flash sideways mean. How are they influencing events on the Island? ARE they influencing events on the Island, as we see the Island in concurrent time. I am utterly uncertain about those flash sideways and their context. I really don't know how to hold them. Flash backs and flash forwards make sense. Flash sideways don't.
