I've heard purists howl about the alternate history aspect (that's not a spoiler because it occurs in the opening scenes). I've seen all the original episodes but was never a fan, so I'm free to consider the whole script a brilliant reimagining. Plot holes - definitely - but I believe this one bears another look.

Reimagining, yes. This is a good example as a successful reimagining.

As someone who hated the original series and not watched but a couple of the movies, I was pretty psyched to see the latest because of all the good word of mouth surrounding it, but it was just kind of there for me. I liked it better than any of the other Star Trek stuff, but it didn't really grab me either.

One thing I can say for sure though, it was much better than Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost which is possibly the worst movie I've seen in the last 5 years-absolutely terrible.

Agreed and I've only seen trailers for it. I won't waste my money. I've always seen Will Ferrell as That Guy, even in real life, a jerk.

Alright, hate is probably too strong but I definitely had no love for it. Give me Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea anyday over it.

screw purists. I am one... and wound up enjoying it anyway. And as for "purism". my mother who only watched the original series when my father did... because he was a geek for the reruns in the 70's/80's, noticed that someone did a lot of research into each familiar character to the point that the actors made them believable as younger versions.

plot holes... who knows. I can state that the pilot episode of the original series has been completely screwed over due to the movie.

I grew up watching the reruns as a kid....but I enjoyed the new movie. I think they did a good job with it. The only thing that really struck me was the younger Spock.....he had too many human qualities.

I loved this new Star Trek. I didn't think the alternate timeline hindered the canon, but actually enabled it and brought it back to life. There was no way they could have really told the story of the crew and make it "new and refreshing" since we already knew what they had been through. And I'm a fan of the original series as well as Next Gen (not that Next Gen had anything to do with this movie...just sayin.)

As to Spock having too many human emotions...well he is half human. He's also young and was thrust into a leadership role that he wasn't really prepared for. He was battling his emotions because of his younger age and hadn't really been put into any type of stressful situations up until that point. Basically he hadn't surpressed his human emotions yet because he never had a real reason to do so. At least that was my take on it.

Good points...I'm just so used to Spock being so non-emotional.
Plus...he is still much more older that the crew in any of the movies/programs. I guess it's just my perception of him.....a non emotional alien....half human or not.
