As I watch the continued slide of the US dollar and oil continuing up into the stratosphere as well as the still blooming mortgage crisis I can't help but marvel at how well Abe did in predicting this state of affairs! He's been warning Jack of this for a long time but now it is at hand. Ironically it seems that Jack would be well prepared with gold at this point. I am wondering if this will be focused on a little more in upcoming books?

You'd think that Killing people would make them like you, but it doesn't! it just makes people dead.

Probably not. These things have a way of waxing and waning, and I'm trying to avoid fixing the stories in any particular year. Some of that is unavoidable, of course, but you notice I've never had anyone make a crack about Bush or Mayor Bloomberg. As far as I'm concerned, it's President Winston.

The deal with this is that the way things look this decline will continue for some time. I was never thinking this could be a central part of any story but it is a cool side note to the RJ storyline. I think it is a great idea to keep the books from being "fixed" in time. While "dated" books can be very good reads, I'd say it is an exception rather than a rule.

It's good to be able to fix books in time when history is the anchor -- as in The Keep and Black Wind -- but that doesn't work for me in a long series like RJ.

I was going to add the very thing to my post but didn't. Where history is essential fixing the narrative in that framework of course is essential. In my experience good fiction (and I'm not trying to say I KNOW anything, just that I've read a lot) is timeless. Especially when you're dealing with a series which spans a period of time. Generalizations about time and cultural references make reading the book at any time something which will not immediately place it as an "80's" book, etc.
I'll give you a good example of this in your own writing. I'm re-reading Conspiracies right now and there is a scene where Kenway is telling Jack about the NWO and they refer to GHWB's reference to it in a speech before Congress (which happened in 1991, eerily on September 11th as well). The phrasing of the dialogue is exellent because Bush could have said that last year or 10 years ago.

Ha! I've been thinking the same things (except for working current events into the RJ novels).

Every day as the economic news gets worse I think - man, Abe would be having a field day with the told-you-so's right now!

and - Jack's going to be a billionaire any day now the way things are going. Sure wish I had a stash of gold and silver coins!

and I wish the Peter LaNague for our times would appear so we could put an end to this insanity. I thought maybe Ron Paul was him, but no, RP turned out to be too kind and gentle. Maybe Rand Paul (the doc's son)?

and I also think FPW is one smart cookie for long ago having seen the possibility of what now seems to be our reality. Wink

President Winston Smith? :yikes:
Now that would be more true than real life!

As well it should these days. No, Ken's right. I was referring to the drug-legalizing president in DatM.
