I think that the ladies with dogs are similar to Gaia, or Mother Earth. Think about it, a small group of immortal women with dogs, animals that are "man's best friend". Any thoughts?

Biggest hint (among many) that I can remember: the Map of the obelisks (from Crisscross) is also the pattern written on the skin of Anya...i.e. every time the otherness damages the earth with another obelisk Anya's skin is damaged with another horrible scar.

I actually didn't think of that, but it makes sense! My big hint was 1 they are all women vowing to protect the earth, and nothing "of this world" can hurt them. I was thinking that now with...spoiler for Gateways[spoiler]anya dead they will need a novice lady with a dog[/spoiler] I have a dog...*hint hint*

These ladies are beings of great powers. They are guiding the chosen ones in the battle. Sorta like a timelord. The dogs are like familiars in a form that is most acceptable to the environs they are in. Who knows perhaps a cat will be used in the future.Atleast that is my take---------Mark

After reading Gateways, I think that those dogs could do anything! The dogs, unlike monkeys, do not draw attention. These Ladies are very smart.

I think most of the pain in the Lady's back comes from the Otherness inflicted scars, rather than old-age...but it would definitely be tough to bear...it's a good thing that Mother Earth can take a lot of damage and keep shrugging it off.
