Wapitikev Wrote:With 500 entries by over 40 users, it certainly seems like anything posted on the Repairman Jack Wiki (to say nothing of any other FPW-related page) could last mere minutes before someone else messes with it.

So http://www.everything2.com is less volatile? I'll have to check it out.

Corwin over at E2 already has a page for Repairman Jack. At first blush, it's a bit dated, with Huanted Air as the last published Jack title.

How do we proceed there if there is already an entry?

[I was sure there was a beating-a-dead-horse smilie there the other day]

Is everything2 really worth our while as somewhere to start?

If the pages are edited less then it's becasue the entire site is quieter than wikipedia.

Ideally, we would have our own site.

Abe's raised eyebrows caused furrows in his extended forehead. "Five in twelve hours?"
"Oh, and like you've never had a cranky day?"

Have you ever been to http://www.repairmanjack.com? Big Grin

Whenever I buy books, I always have a poke around wikipedia to find out more about the author, other books they've done etc and I was struck by how scarce the info on wikipedia is about RJ and FPW's books in general.

Is wikipedia the bee's knees? :dontknow: But it's so popular that it's criminal that FPW is so underdeveloped over there . . . and which group of people better to do something about that? Confusedmilewinkgrin:

Here is the entire wikipedia entry on The Tomb:

The Tomb is the first volume in a series of Repairman Jack books written by American author F. Paul Wilson. It is also the second volume in a series of six novels known as The Adversary Cycle. It was recently updated for 2004, in order to tie in chronologically with the following Repairman Jack novels. Also in 2004, it was re-released under its original intended title, Rakoshi, by Borderlands Press.

Surely there's more that we can put in here?

I have had a look at the FAQ for E2 and there is a way to Assimilate outdated articles (they call them Nodes), but if we need to keep watch to make sure that someone else doesn't file a Nuke request on our Node, then we may as well simply police our own Wiki entry.

As far as getting into editorial battles with others on Wiki, how can one idiot who posts something weird contend with a dozen or more people from this board constantly changing it back to what it should be...since we all have agreed what it should be in advance and it is accessible to us, here, at any time.

Sheer weight of numbers should be enough to defeat any opposition.

And it's not like we aren't stubborn enough to win those battles.

So, as much as it pains me Confusedmilewinkgrin:, I must cast my lot with Bones and begin working on Wiki edits. I volunteer to help draft the Demonsong entry...anyone want to edit it when I'm done?

Yes, Bones, I have been there. Great group of people on the forums there. /Tips hat. Cool

We can definitely do something about this, and we do have the muscle to police it ourselves if need be.

I think we should make a Wiki Sticky, and then all ideas can flow through there.

Someone mentioned in another thread somewhere that when doing our own entries, we should be careful about spoilers. I just thought I would bring this up again as food for thought for those writing and editing entries.

ROTFLMAO.

Wiki Sticky...that's funny!

...and also a great idea!

...although we may need more than one before too long; I could see a single thread getting reeeeeealy long after the first Wiki article or two

...eventually we may need an entire Forum section for the Wiki project (it might be somewhat unwieldy to have the entire first page of the main forum filled with Wiki Stickys, for instance). The Sticky's could be for the established Wiki articles and then other discussion topics could occur underneath.

For now, I'm focussing on getting the first one or two started.

I agree that a Wiki work is a good idea but you fail to realize the point I was making all along. If the masters there feel that your piece is not up to THEIR standards they can change it AND ban your IP address if you persist in editing against their own policy. They're a bunch of megalomaniacs over there. Strength of numbers would mean nothing since all of our IP addresses could be blocked. I may be overstating this whole thing but I just really hate the way they run that site and the way that the super-editors get to decide what is "right" or not. So maybe I'm biased.

Well, only having been a Wiki editor for about 2 days, that is all news to me.

Would they really ban a dozen IP addresses? Two dozen? On what grounds? What about dynamically assigned IP addresses? There are 1000 members on the Board (yes the members lists says 1000, exactly. COOL!). Would they ban 1000 people from editing one page?

In any event, since Wiki is the most popular site of its kind then we obviously have to start there...but can't we mirror the site here? Does anyone out there know if a Joomla extension exists for Wiki-like document sharing/editing (Web design and web-apps are not my thing but there are Joomla extensions that talk about Wiki...do any of them allow Wiki...or do you still need MediaWiki as well?)

As we need to start on Wiki and then move elsewhere, I'm going back to my draft of the Demonsong Wiki.
