I remember reading in an F File the pronunciation of Rasalom (rah-sah-lom) and started wondering about other pronunciations as I'm reading through Rakoshi.

First, Rakoshi. I flip between two. Rack-oh-shee and Rah-koh-shee.

And Gia. I dunno. I've always said Guy-ah but one of my friends says Gee-ah. Maybe I'm just associating Gia with Gaia.

Good thoughts.

I've always pronounced Rakoshi as "ruh-ko-shee", and Gia like how Gia DeLorentis pronounces it - "Jee-uh".

I used to work with an Indian woman and I asked her about that word. She didn't know what I was talking about. When I explained what it was (in my Americanese, stating it was an Indian 'demon') she said some other R word I can't remember.

They passed an old woman who was just opening the door of a brown Cadillac. An old man was already sitting in the passenger seat. The car had a personalized plate with the letters “J-U-S-P-R-A-Y”.
“That stuff work?” Israel said to her.
“‘Scuse me?” the little old woman said, clutching her keys.
“The spray. Does it keep them away?”
“Keep who away?” She looked confused.
“I gotcha.” Israel gave her a conspiratorial wink.

Blast me cosmic ray-tanned hide, Dave. 'Til I read that link you so kindly provided, I've been for years thinking the rakosh were a gem of Paul's writerly imagination. Now I've been clued in.

I always wondered about that. In the Latin there was only one pronunciation of the letter "G," and that was the hard "G," as it is pronounced in GO, or GOLF.

(Not knowing the difference between Latin and Italian. . . .)
