BK Akitas Wrote:I've been outed as the last boardie who hasn't read Reborn and Reprisal. I admit it. Now I swear I've read everything else by FPW but I never got to those two (I even own a hardcover first of Black Wind which was a lucky snarf).
Now I gotta find a bookseller open on independence day to get them and catch up.
No no, no need to beat me for this, I'll give myself forty lashes for this oversight.

Take it easy bk Wink. No biggie. On the plus side you get to read 2 great books!

I wrapped it up yesterday evening and I dug it. I said earlier that it was my favorite since Gateways and that held true. RJ was at his resourceful best and he certainly gave new meaning to the term 'road pizza', what a bad-ass scene that is-I cheered.

I too, wonder about the Kicker movement in two ways: what role they'll play, and how people become converts to the movement. I think Ken's chrysallis guess about the symbol holds water. I am even more curious about the Winslow character and his dreams-that string did not get tugged on too hard.

I think this is also the biggest cliffhanger of the series, they are a lot of balls still up in the air. As the series goes on it is getting harder to maintain that 'stand alone' feel for each book.

It was truly creepy to discover Jonah's expanded role in the story, for my money, Jonah is one of the all-time scariest villians and the whole purification bit only confirms it to me. Dawn's hell is ranks up there with the Rafe/Lisl relationship as being one of the more disturbing things I've read. BTW, my wife wanted me to mention that she thinks you, FPW that is, have some issues you need to sort out.

Connections to other work: I gotta believe that the Duane Ready mentioned is the same store from "Interlude At Duane's", and isn't the cop, Augustino?, the same guy from Reprisal?

Overall I put it just below my three favorites of the series, The Tomb, Conspiracies and All The Rage, which is where all the others in the series end up. It reminded me more of Legacies than anything else, there was very little in the way of the supernatural in this one.

I started reading BLOODLINE since June 20. Took a month plus 9 days, but finally finished reading! (If it was Japanese edition, I would finish it in 2 or 3 days.)

As usual, it was great and I enjoyed reading. And I was surprised I found name of Jonah Stevens in here. I'll re-read Reborn for past details!

I laughed at the scene of Jack found two books, "Berzerk!" and "Rakshasa!". I'm sure P Frank Winslow came from Otherness and he is trying to reveal Jack's existence secretly. Hee hee.... Big Grin

I have a question.

At the last Thursday, in chapter 6, Dawn met Mr. Osara(we know who he is!) on the bridge, and she believed Mr. Osara is detective who hired her mother. But why? She met Jack in Work.

Am I missed something?

Amon Wrote:Question: Is all oDNA a product of the Otherness, or could some also be a product of the Ally? If that's the case, then could there be a slim possibility that Jack could be a descendant of Glaeken or maybe even Rasalom? That's probably presumptuous, but it's definitely something to think about.

I'm not sure about it, but in my guess, some people has oDNA. Jonah Stevens, Jeremy Bolton, Hank Thompson, Jack, Glaeken...maybe more. Otherness and Ally already knows who has oDNA. After all, this war is Otherness vs. Ally, and they are chosen draftees from Otherness or Ally.

Amon Wrote:All in all, this was another fantastic plot and story. I especially loved the tension created by the fact that Jack has yet to tell Gia that the "accident" that almost took her and Vicky's life, and killed her unborn child, was no accident. I can't imagine how she'll react when she finally finds out.

That scene must be the most harsh moments. Sad

Amon Wrote:Finally, I presume that the old man that's been spying on Jack is Glaeken?

Trust your guess.

Amon Wrote:Anyway, with all the loose ends from this book waiting to be tied up, the next book ought to be a real milestone.

I agree. Oh, I can't wait for next RJ book!

Susan Wrote:I thought the Bolton character was a terrific bad guy. Loved his southern accent and his sick devotion to his daddy. Paul, you did a bang up job with that hick dialogue! Honestly, as disturbed as he was, I was sorry to see him go. And what a WAY to go! Holy cow! LOLOL! Don't know how the "get offed by Jack" contest could make the death any worse than that.

Hank Thompson was also really bad guy character. When Jack caught Hank's arm in the car's window and Jack dragged him, I laughed hard. I was glad I didn't read that scene in the train. Otherwise.....Big Grin

Susan Wrote:One of my favorite scenes is at the end when Dawn is ready to commit suicide and a man (we first think it's Jack) talks her out of jumping and talks her into getting in his car. But it's not Jack, it's Rasalom! That badass knows how to make an entrance. I loved how the car windows darkened when she got in and how when he stroked her cheek it made her very, very sleepy.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....Ahem, anyway... Excellent novel!

Susan

At first I also thought he is Jack. But when he introduced his driver, Henry, I thought he is Kicker. Then he showed card, and his name is....Mr. Osala.

That was great and a excited moment!

OK, I was a little dim, and didn't recognize Jonah (it's been a few years since I've read Reborn and Reprisal) which changes my theories below... but I still had to wonder if Jack was once again, well-meaning but assisting in his own peril, like with the MiB's.

Perhaps the oDNA is neutral, a source for both the Other and the Ally to bring game pieces into play. Having Jack be Chock Full o' oDNA Nuts was a foregone conclusion to me, but obviously oDNA doesn't mean eeeeeevillle. Even Big R grabbing Dawn doesn't mean she's part of his plan, just an opportunity he needed to take, or else Dawn's child raised in the company of Jack, Glaeken and others would become another warrior for our survival. The fact that The End of the World As We Know It is so close, though, means that this child probably can't be more than a pawn... but I'm looking forward to the future surprises and the final version of Nightworld.

I got my copy Thursday and finished reading it this morning. It's so good to not feel left out anymore. Big Grin

nijimeijer Wrote:Like Infernal was to Harbingers, I felt this book will be to the next one. Kind of a "part one of two" set. It introduced new concepts and characters and situations that I imagine will be resolved (somewhat at least) in the next book. That said, I enjoyed it a great deal. I enjoyed the new story elements as well as the addition to the mythology of the F. Pauliverse.

I agree niji - thanks for putting words to how I was feeling about it. While I liked Infernal a lot, I LOVED Harbingers. I liked Bloodline a lot too, just not quite as much as Harbingers. But now there are many things to ponder while we wait for the next installment....

I think Jonah's "Plan" with Hank, Jeremy, Christy and Dawn was a Backup Plan. Little "Jimmy" was about the same age as Hank and Jeremy, right? Or am I tangling up the timeline? If they are about the same age, well, Jonah knew that Jimmy was The One, but he also knew that anything could happen, hence the Plan as a backup - just in case.

Where does Jack get his oDNA from? Since he apparently has such a large amount, it has to be from both his mother and father. And I think now we know why the Ally and the Otherness seem to have been keeping an eye on Jack all his life and sometimes meddling in it. All the oDNA must get their attention, at least a little bit.

What does Rasalom have planned for Dawn? I don't have the foggiest idea yet, but it can't be anything good!

As for P. Frank Winslow - it was highly amusing that his publisher wouldn't touch the Legacies or Conspiricies stories. I'm very curious to see where this storyline is going. And I'm greatly relieved that it doesn't look at all like the Dark Tower series' "Stephen King as a character and the author" foolishness. I was only a little bit worried about that. Wink
