That's something only you can decide.  There's that indefinable thing called "taste."  Only you can decide what is to your taste.  As for me, I really liked the story, the costuming was also authentic as were the firearms and even the noise that the firearms made -- black powder has a different sound signature from smokeless powder.  This is the only western I've seen that got it right.  
There are only two little errors in the movie"
1.  They cut a scene wrong and it looks like Charlie fires nine shots from his six-shooter.
2.  While using a watering trough for cover, Charlie "shakes" the empty cases from his handgun.  (Black powder is a dirty powder, that is; it fouls things up.  Empty brass would not "shake" out of the chambers of a six gun, you would have to use the ejector rod.)
Paul liked the story, I liked the story, you 
might want to give it another try.  That's for you to decide.

P.S. Kevin Costner is in a rather unique situation; the critics seem to have a tendency to dislike his movies even though they tend to be quite successful at the box office.
