I'm still waiting for the next great western after watching Seraphim Falls last night. It was a good movie, but fell a little short of my high hopes. After an excellent first half hour it kind of meandered aimlessly to its conclusion. Both Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan were solid in the leads, Brosnan actually looked like a rugged mountain man. The scenery is spectacular from the mountains to the flatlands; everyone looked tiny in its vastness.

I certainly enjoyed it more than last year's disappointing The Proposition. All in all, I recommend it if you are a fan of westerns.

I'm with you on this one Scott. Started out really good, then seemed to drag it's way to the climax which was a bit lame. It was obvious who Anjelica Huston was supposed to be portraying and completely silly to even have that in the story. I did love Brosnan's ambush on Wincott. I didn't see that coming!! That was crazy. I've been waiting for a good Western, too. Looks like we've got another long wait.

speaking of good westerns, I love the Trinity series!! My name is nobody, Trinity is still my name, They call me Trinity, Boot Hill. They are great westerns with a good bit of humor mixed in! (Terrence Hill is the star, and they are dubbed in places due to either French or Italian co-stars depending on which movie it is)

OPEN RANGE is one of my favorites as well. If you haven't already seen them, may I recommend three Tom Selleck westerns:

Last Stand At Saber River

Crossfire Trail

They're good stories, but I think you will also enjoy the authentic firearms, the costuming, and may I predict that you will also greatly enjoy the sense of honor presented by the characters Selleck portrays.

I watched The Outlaw Josey Wales for the first time the day before yesterday, was fairly impressed.

The Wild Bunch is a pretty good movie though I remember wishing it had been just a little bit shorter.

I thought The Propostion was brilliant, great story and fantastic photography. It was a little nowhere in-between the action story and the romance story, it could have done with deciding which one it wanted to be and focusing more on that one.

I tried to watch Open Range but I think I actually stopped it halfway through; Kevin Costner makes me want to smash things. Is it a good one? Should I try again?

That's something only you can decide. There's that indefinable thing called "taste." Only you can decide what is to your taste. As for me, I really liked the story, the costuming was also authentic as were the firearms and even the noise that the firearms made -- black powder has a different sound signature from smokeless powder. This is the only western I've seen that got it right.

There are only two little errors in the movie"

1. They cut a scene wrong and it looks like Charlie fires nine shots from his six-shooter.

2. While using a watering trough for cover, Charlie "shakes" the empty cases from his handgun. (Black powder is a dirty powder, that is; it fouls things up. Empty brass would not "shake" out of the chambers of a six gun, you would have to use the ejector rod.)

Paul liked the story, I liked the story, you might want to give it another try. That's for you to decide.

P.S. Kevin Costner is in a rather unique situation; the critics seem to have a tendency to dislike his movies even though they tend to be quite successful at the box office.

I like some of the films he has been in, but I don't like him at all. Untouchables is a wicked film, but wouldnt suffer if someone else was Elliot Ness. JFK was a wicked film, but would it really be all that different is someone else was starring in it? Interesting question, I suppose.

The next time I see it on DVD I'll pick it up and give it a go. I'm not gonna let Costner spoil a good movie for me

I haven't seen the movies you mentioned, but the ones I have seen -- and liked -- were; Dances with Wolves, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, For Love of the Game, and of course, Open Range.

Field of Dreams wasn't bad either.
