That's the guy! "El Neil" is in the acknowledgements section of the book, and "Neil The Anarchist" is the character based on L. Neil Smith.

After revisiting the roof I see you’re correct Ken, the flagpole's wood alright. Looking back I’m reminded of Appleton's tomato garden and Harry Bok’s CB antenna, good of you to mention it; thanks.
