This question may be considered minor spoilers so if you haven't read Reprisal yet proceed with caution.

So near the beginning of the book it's mentioned that Will has a theory as to why the mystery call only affects land lines and not cell phones. But that theory is never explained that I recall. Can anyone shed light on this subject?

I don't remember cell phones being mentioned and am just brainstorming: Maybe it has something to do with "land lines." The phone lines being in the ground being easily controlled by Rasalom, who is presumedly IN the the ground also. Of course this may not explain why he couldn't control cell towers to some extent. Hmm. I'll have to ponder this more.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

That's a good theory. I should also mention this is in the revised texted from Borderlands.

In a completely unauthorized answer, I say you are correct. This subject was brought up on a couple of occasions on the old board and I believe that the easiest fix to the advent of cellular phones was to allow The Big R the ability to effect only landlines or for him to maintain a low profile as he takes stock of his situation.

That and the continuous ring of a landline is more ominous than say, the black eyed peas "My Humps" playing on a loop. With the advent of mp3 ringtones the fright factor drops a few brackets.

I recommend pleasant.

Think about the voice you hear when you pick up...and where he's calling from.

Makes sense to me.

I think it would have been more frightening Paul if when little Danny called, he got someones privacy manager and had to leave his name so that father Bill would know to answer.

Operator: The party you have called is not accepting calls from parties who block their number. Please unblock your number or state your name and the nature of the call after the tone. <beep>

Danny: Yes, this is Danny, I am calling from abysmal horror and dread to speak with Father Ryan.

Operator: Please wait...<muzak version of California Dreaming plays softly>...You are now being connected to a answering device.

Danny: Shit.
