Got DOOMED #1 and THE KEEP #1 yesterday from trusty Midtown Comics in Manhattan. It was really weird -- a number of the customers were overweight guys wearing backpacks. Has anyone experienced this before?
Anyway, love Love LOVE "CUTS". What a great job -- terrific drawings and a fun, fun whoop of a story. More broadly, I really like the whole issue and urge everyone to buy it. Each story is well worth the price of admission.
And the creepy character they use to personify the magazine -- a Vampirella-like "Ms. Doomed" -- is an absolute laff riot, her introductory remarks to the reader are very, very funny.
As for THE KEEP #1, I enjoyed it and will buy all the issues, but for the most part I feel the adaptation is not going to -- cannot -- hold a candle to the novel and therefore may be superfluous. Based on this first issue, the novel is just umpteen times creepier, more interesting, affecting, etc. I also happen to not care too much for the illustrations, though that's a matter of taste and others may count them a strong point.
