#1 is on sale. Four 15-page stories. Check out the line-up. I'm in the company of Bloch and Matheson (as well as the redoubtable Mr. Schow)...

I wanted to read it but the print was so tiny these poor old eyes couldn't make it out.

Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.

I finally made it to Mile-Hi Comics to get both Doomed and The Keep, but could only get The Keep as Doomed was sold out and my purchase cleaned out their stock of The Keep so it looks like sales are brisk. Now on to the reading of it.

Read the review. Gotta find the mag, after those comparisons to EERIE and CREEPY. Might even stash a extra mag or two in my bank box for investment purposes. But wondered a bit at the "reliable F. Paul Wilson" comment. Thought the quote could have used a better adjective.

The "omnipresent F. Paul Wilson"?
The "omnipotent F. Paul Wilson"?

Got DOOMED #1 and THE KEEP #1 yesterday from trusty Midtown Comics in Manhattan. It was really weird -- a number of the customers were overweight guys wearing backpacks. Has anyone experienced this before?

Anyway, love Love LOVE "CUTS". What a great job -- terrific drawings and a fun, fun whoop of a story. More broadly, I really like the whole issue and urge everyone to buy it. Each story is well worth the price of admission.

And the creepy character they use to personify the magazine -- a Vampirella-like "Ms. Doomed" -- is an absolute laff riot, her introductory remarks to the reader are very, very funny.

As for THE KEEP #1, I enjoyed it and will buy all the issues, but for the most part I feel the adaptation is not going to -- cannot -- hold a candle to the novel and therefore may be superfluous. Based on this first issue, the novel is just umpteen times creepier, more interesting, affecting, etc. I also happen to not care too much for the illustrations, though that's a matter of taste and others may count them a strong point.

I have to admit to having similar feelings after my initial read; it seemed to move too quickly. I have reread it a couple of times and I liked it better each time. From here out, I think I'll reserve judgment until I can read all 5 issues together. As for the art, I think it works well for the story(I see The Keep as a b/w film in my mind).

Compressing The Keep to 110 illustrated pages was one of the most difficult writing jobs I've ever had. A better fit would have been 150 pages, but they didn't want the graphic novel that long.
