On Thursday I had lunch with producer Barry Rosenbush and writer Chris Morgan. The director-to-be had to cancel out because of a family matter. (I can’t mention his name yet because he and Beacon are still doing the terms-of-contract dance.)

Chris is about finished with his first draft of Fast & Furious 3 and will start the Jack rewrite next week. It involves moving the back story to China, changing Kusum and Kolabati to Chinese, and the Rakoshi to some sort of ancient Chinese demon thing. Other changes will bring it further in line with the source novel.

We should have the (I hope) final script in June. The director should be signed by then. Once they have the script-and-director package completed, they plan to take it to the actors they think will make a good Jack.

The big fly in this ointment is a looming strike by the WGA which will put everything on hold.

What? Rakoshi is Chinese demon thing? Not Japanese demon thing? That's interesting. Smile Anyway,I expect it.

What!?? That sounds like a bad joke. The English/India connection made sense. Why China? Are they going to add in some wire-fu and ruin everything? Sounds like a case of Hollywood people changing something for the sake of changing it.

or perhaps... as we know more about Japan than we do about China, it'll make the film more mysterious...

just my 2 pence worth

What does Japan have to do with anything?

Hi! This is my first post; I'm excited about the upcoming RJ movie. And of course, everything Jack Wink

I was kinda disturbed at first when I heard they were changing the ancient India backstory to ancient China, mostly because I'm leery of what kind of demon they're going to choose or just plain make up. As far as I know, and I'm ethnic Chinese, there aren't a lot of Chinese demons/creatures quite like the Rakoshi. As in pure evil, created by the gods just to kill humans. I mean, even the Chinese dragon is a mostly benign creature, or at least not openly malevolent. I'm interested to hear what they're thinking of replacing the Rakoshi with...

Hmmm...well, I think they can come up with a similarly viable China/England connection, since the English did go to China as well as India (after all, they're neighbors.)

And as to 'wire-fu,' that's a very new thing in movies and I don't like it myself. Way too fake, unlike real gong fu and the realistic action in the Jack novels. But I think some serious, well-executed martial arts can add a lot of sparkle and excitement to the movie. If they choose to use martial arts in the movie, I hope that's the path they take!

My two cents...can't wait for this movie to come out Smile

I was under the impression that the filmmakers were going to just transplant the Rakoshi into the Chinese mythology, but you bring up an interesting question. Are they intending to change the creatures to Chinese creature?

Paul, are the Rakoshi actually based on authentic Indian mythology or strictly a product of your warped, demented imagination?! (Of course, I mean that in a good way. Wink )

Hm...Well, i kind of hope they dont use martial arts and wire fu. It's good, but seriously, jack doesn't use kung fu or anything, and he doesnt need sl-mo for his physical abi;lities. This isn't that sort of movie.

They'd probably be formidable in Crane style too!
