That parrot's not dead. He's pining for the fjords!

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

You badger lovers might want to check out http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/badgers/. I suggest that everyone else stay away from this, however, since it is difficult to get out of your mind once you've seen it. (Fortunately the site also has a built-in antidote in case you disregard my warning: http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/kenya/, or the live-action version at http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/kenya+live/. Those will also take over your mind, but they're easier to live with. Big Grin)

I second the noble dachshund! Disguised as charming little lapdogs, they were actually bred to pull badgers out of their burrows.

Sadly, we recently had to put our's down... Sad

They were bred to run badgers out. A badger would kill a dachshund in a second. The high pitched, ultra loud bark of the weiner dog chases the badger out of the hole so the hunter or trapper can get it. The body of the dachshund is perfect for getting into the tunnels badgers live in.
Mine is a black and tan dapple. His name is Dyson (Miles Bennett Dyson developed The Terminators). He would get his ass kicked by a toothless cat. He wouldn't have a prayer against a badger.

I know--I was being facetious. They are quite brave, though. The night before we had Sammy put down he pulled himself off the couch and dragged his way toward the front door, barking, when someone rang the bell--ever the protector. It really broke my heart.

Sammy was a smooth, red miniature. He was only six, but had bone cancer and had finally lost the will to live. When he stopped eating and drinking we knew it was time. Up until a week before he still acted like he enjoyed living.

I'll also support the dachshund option. After all, they are about as close as a dog can get to being a ferret.

(My baby sister has a dachshund that she named Oscar Meyer. "Oh, yeah, like THAT'S real clever," I hear you saying. Ah, but her married name is "Berger". Think about it. Big Grin)

Sammy sounds like he was a heck of a little guy. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Over the last few years I've gotten to know dachshunds through a dear friend who belongs to a dachshund rescue group. They are wonderdul little hounds.

I recommend pleasant.

I love dachshunds. They're sweet little dogs full of personality. A good friend of ours has a pair of minniature long-haired dogs. They're funny and as friendly as could be. When we decide to get a dog I think that's what it will be. They're one of the few breeds we can agree on. Also, there's a rescue group here that, sadly, always has several available.
