I agree with what's been written in response to your post. "Reborn" sets things up, lets us know what evil Rasalom can do in this world, and tells us more about the key figures in the story. Do stick around for "Reprisal" and "Nightworld." They will knock your socks off.
As far as offending anyone with your opinion, you can't. So long as you speak your piece respectfully and don't attack a person for thinking differently from you, you are absolutely entitled to disagree with what anyone or everyone says.
Welcome, glad to have you aboard!
When I bought the book and read the dust jacket, it sounded like I wouldn't like it at all. There didn't seem to be a character I'd really get behind. I need a strong character to pull for (RJ for example).
That said, I loved the book. I think the thing that struck me most was the fact that I felt like I was hating the good guys (The Chosen idiots) and pulling for the bad guys (Carol, Jim, and Father Bill). I kept finding myself thinking, The Chosen need to succeed but I hate those stupid bastards!
I think my own conflict made the story special to me. I like books, and movies, that give me something to step on myself for. I also like, now and then mind you, for the "bad guy" to completely win. It is rare, but when it happens in books or movies, I get a little excited. I think it's because I know it will piss so many people off, but they did it anyway. Plus it satisfies that little bit of "Otherness" in me.
