I've done it for a lot less. But it was to impress the ladies! (They never seemed to be that impressed though)

That is correct. I remember seeing a documentary on PBS (or maybe it was The Discovery Channel, too) about the Alaskan crab fishermen and how many of them are killed every season.

I found some references; some say fisher, some say timber cutter

I'll have to look for this show; when, what channel is it on?

I heard that the most dangerous job in the world was fighting oil well fires. And the second most dangerous job was working arrestor cables on an aircraft carrier. But that was years ago, and it took into consideration, not only the number of fatalities, but in comparison to the number of people who do that sort of job.

I've heard it was the deep sea welders. Big bucks, but short life expectancy.

Going off on related tangent here....

I stumbled on an author, John McKinna, who in real life was a deep sea welder. I don't think he's welding anymore, but he did write 3 action thrillers that involve underwater adventures of some sort usually involving his trade. I really enjoyed them. I ripped through "Shark Lake," "Tiger Reef," and "Crash Dive."

Years ago my mother used to say to me... "In this world, Elwood, you can be oh so smart or oh so pleasant."
Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.
