It takes a rare breed to withstand those conditions. But I bet they are payed well. A good fishing story with guys like this is "To Fill the Sea and Air" by the Man. Great short story.

Could be they do the job for bragging rights, it also could be that it pays very well. Could be both.

I think deep sea fishing takes courage and resolve. It's always been dangerous. I've always liked L'Amoures stories about the sea, he makes it sound kinda like a sirens song.

I've been in a couple of small gales . . . green water coming in over the bow and stinging your eyes. It's exhilarating! Right up to the point where it's exhausting, and you start acting like a robot. As Tristan Jones said; "One hand for yourself, and one for the boat."

Forget what they tell you in the books, under sail, there are only six forces of wind:

Force 1. No wind at all.

Force 2. Not enough wind.

Force 3. Too much wind.

Force 4. Much too much wind.

Force 5. Wind, wind, wind, oooweee will it ever stop blowing?!

Force 6. BLAMMO!

I haven't seen it, but my husband really likes this show. I forget the exact figure, but they make A LOT of money in the short crab season. It might be worth the money if you don't value your life and limbs more! Probably an adrenaline junkie's dream. You wouldn't catch me doing that though!

I have never seen this show, but I seem to recall from several years ago that crab (or whatever) fishing in the north off Alaska was rated the riskiest (most dangerous) job in the world.

Their pay depends on the amount of catch. On the last show I caught the deckhands of one boat made $10,000 a piece in a 3 and 1/2 day season - it usually runs about 5 days, I believe. Yeah, they also do it for bragging rights. It's a damn nice payday and a great story to brag about, but I can't see myself risking life and limb for a few thousand bucks and a big head.
