I forgot all about this movie. This is a direct to cable thriller in the same vein of an X-Files episode. It concerns a half Greenland, half American woman who befriends a little boy who suddenly dies.

She investigates after figuring his death wasn't just an accident and discovers that the boy's father was part of some Antarctic expedition and something pretty cool you'd never think of in a million years happened (I don't want to spoil too much Cool ).

Anyway, it's worth the rent and Smilla is played by the very beautiful Julia Ormond. I haven't seen it in Blockbuster as of late, but then again, I haven't looked, either.

I liked Gabriel Byrne in the movie, also. But the book was way better.

Years ago my mother used to say to me... "In this world, Elwood, you can be oh so smart or oh so pleasant."
Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.

Sounds interesting, I'll have to check whether it is available here.

Who is the author of the novel?

"Smilla's Sense of Snow" is written by Peter Hoeg. It's a literate thriller which takes a look into worlds about which I knew little...Inuits of Greenland and life in Cophenhagen. Very cool.
