I can remember falling asleep once in the theater: during GREMLINS! I bet people would find that hard to believe. I guess it just never caught my attention.

Yeah, I figured there would be some disagreement on that one [THE HAUNTING]. But I liked it. I thought it was a decent ghost story and was beautiful visually.

I'm with Kenji on this one. The 1999 version of THE HAUNTING is abysmal, despite the fact that it stars some of my favorite actors. It cannot hold a candle to the orginal 1963 version of THE HAUNTING starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. That scared the living daylights out of me when I saw it way back when and since. The later version bears scant resemblance to either the wonderful Shirley Jackson book, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, on which both movies are based, or to the sterling 1963 version.

"Silence lay against the wood and stone of Hill House. And whatever walked there, walked alone."

God, that line still gives me chills. I love Shirley Jackson.

Go ahead and throw down a list of your haunted house movies, too.

Sean

The Legend of Hell House: if they had kept in the possesion scene from the book it would have been a classic.

Burnt Offerings: takes a little while to get going but once it does it hits you like a ton of bricks. Big Grin

The House on Haunted Hill: The remake was better but the original had some camp value.

That isn't a ton as I previously bragged but it's a start.

Kind of an editorial note here and FYI (this is not a correction of anyone's post, BTW):

Shirley Jackson's book, "The Haunting of Hill House," is completely unrelated to the film "The House on Haunted Hill." The film versions of her book are called simply, "The Haunting."

Just so you know.

I wonder if not having seen the first one helped me like the new version. If I had affection for such a classic from my experience, I might not have liked it either. I'm kind of worried about Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS coming out with Tom Cruise in that way. The original film has some very special touches and was good and scary with great special effects for its time. Can a big blockbuster measure up? I guess we'll see, but I hope I don't feel about it like you do about the new version of THE HAUNTING. I have my doubts, though.

Also not to be mistaken with.

Sean,
You may be right. I am so devoted to Shirley Jackson's book, first and foremost, and the 1963 version of the film was faithful to it, unlike the more recent film, which was nearly another story altogether.

I love the old "War of the Worlds." The new one will be a very different movie, I suspect, which is not to say it will not be good on its own. It is, after all, Spielberg. The original was quaint and scary, it its way, and so very much of its time.

Well, this is what makes the board fun - so many different opinions. Makes the world go 'round, right? Smile
