It's since been rated a classic, but when I saw FREAKS back in 1972 at the good old Elgin, I was alone among the soi-disant "hip" crowd there as hailing it as a touching story of love and solidarity. The general reaction was, "Ewww...freaks!" But maybe I wasn't toking up as hard as the rest before the screening.
