do you think the wine had gone bad and he got ripped off from the auction house? Or do they just really have no taste? Or is the author making fun of people who spend ridiculous amounts of money on ?fine? wine?

It has been proven that wine connoisseurs were unable to tell expensive wine from cheap wine in blind taste tests. That said my buddy has a wine shop with a merlot that is $40 per glass and the stuff is amazing.
