I have a funny story to share...funny to me at least. My mom is also a big FPW fan, but doesn't have a whole lot of time to read with her job and my siblings still at home, so she asked me to recommend a good book for her to read next. So, I pulled the copy of Black Wind I gave her last christmas off the shelf. It's tied with Sims as my favorite book and I love it! So, I figure she'll enjoy it too. Well, she called me last night to yell at me about it! She said she loves the story and is enjoying the history involved, but is getting bogged down with the Japanese terms and culture references. She was actually yelling about "how are you supposed to pronounce Meiko and what the hell is a tatami  ?!" I thought it was so funny. I laughed so hard I couldn't talk at first. So, when I regained my composure I guessed at the pronounciations of some of the words for her and told her to suck it up! I don't know how you're supposed to say those words, but I don't think it matters when I'm reading. She does, apparently. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that amusing story! Wink

Well, I'm another one of those who likes to have the correct pronunciation of the words. I'm pretty sure Meiko is pronounced like Mexico without the "X", and tatami (ta-TA-me) is a woven mat.

Of course Kenji would be more help.

Stacy, that is funny.

When I read BLACK WIND I pretty much skimmed over the foreign words. My brain took them in so it could recognize them the next time around, and I understood them for content. But as far as stopping the reading to get the pronunciation, no I don't do that. I read too fast and I don't want to interrupt myself.

Reading is freedom.
The mind soars, no earthly cares,
no limitations.

Years ago my mother used to say to me... "In this world, Elwood, you can be oh so smart or oh so pleasant."
Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.
You may quote me.

I like the correct pronunciations as well, but they are beyond my anglicized? mind. I am frequently appalled during movie adaptations when I hear how badly my mind has been butchering foreign words and phrases.

That's what I do too. I just need to know what they mean the next time I see them. I don't care how they're actually supposed to be pronounced. Big Grin

Hey, stacy. Ask me anything. Cool

Meiko's pronunciation is Mei*-ko**

*......Similar to May
**....Similar to coin.

And, this is Tatami. Tatami is a sort of Japanese carpet.

That's nice explanation, Ken.

Oh, no........it's too bad, Maggers. This is chance of Japanese lesson. Correct pronunciation is important. That's why FPW used Japanese words in Black Wind (I think so).
