So you have the main character working on two cases that might be related, deftly woven among subplots involving his girlfriend, his daughter, politics inside the police department, and the city's mayoral campaign. So there's a richness and depth to the story telling and character development that you just don't have time for in a feature film. This is what "The Killing" was trying to do, but failed
