JJ wants to do a lot of things and I think he's saying that shit to please the SW fanboys base. He's more vocal about his love for SW, so I can see him going off in that direction instead of sticking with the ST franchise he rebooted.
Here's my thing with JJ though. He's full of himself. He acts like his poop don't stink because he was successful with LOST and NuTrek. He and his LOST cohorts LIED about LOST "There is no time travel in the show" and then turned what was a great series into a muddle mess at the end that seemed haphazardly thrown together. Yeah, we all "get it"...everything on the island happened, the church is the "waiting room" where once they die (at different times throughout life) they go there and wait for everyone from the island to get there. Yeah..great...it was still a lame ass ending.
So I'll be happy with this latest Trek because I really like Cumberbatch and have for a few years now since getting into Sherlock. I hope he's not Khan but if he is, so be it. Nothing I can do to change that.
Somehow I think Trekkies are more accepting of what JJ did with Trek then what SW fanboys are willing to accept with their beloved Star Wars saga. Even if Lucas is going to be a part of it.
