Paul,
I was born and raised in Hawthorne, three towns from Oakland and the Ramapo mountains. Growing up we heard ALOT about the slaves who escaped to the north and whom hid in the Ramapo mountains and woods; ultimately marrying or ending up with Ramapo indians.

As late as the 1970s ( I left in 1978) we heard many of these descendants rarely, if ever, left their part of the Ramapo mountain area and they didn't let outsiders in (for the most part). We heard of stories where firefighters would have to fight fires in and around their encampments but the fire trucks were themselves set ablaze. This tale and others, particularly about how they look proliferated widely in my area.

If you have ever heard of the Jackson Whites, have you used the Jackson White lore in any of your books? I'm new to your work (finally got to the 5th Repairman Jack book today), so pls forgive me if I'm not totally familiar with all of what you have written.
Jane

They sound like story-material indeed.

And Hawthorne, California is the birthplace of the blues.

That was an attempted joke, Ken.

Hawthorne is the home-town of Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson--the core of the Beach Boys.

I consider Brian Wilson a musical genius, but no one's ever confused the Beach Boys with the blues!

And a pretty pathetic one at that.

Hawthorne and the Ramapo Mountains are in northern New Jersey and southern New York.

Not every gag works, Ken. Nature of the game.

If you'd ever held an audience, on stage, as I have, you'd know that.

And why couldn't you just admit, "I didn't get the reference."
