A lone Indian Gurkha soldier armed only with his Khukri knife fended off some forty armed robbers on a train when they attempted to rape the 18 year old girl sitting near him.

That is a pretty cool story. Even though he had his Khukri he was still up against 40 guys...

A knife in the hands of an expert is the most dangerous, scariest thing around, far more dangerous than a gun. I received my knife defense training from an Israeli Defense Forces sergeant-major and this guy could take out a room in seconds with a knife. I remember thinking (after he'd killed me in training for the tenth or twentieth time) "I am so glad this guy is on our side."

Joe Haldeman mentioned, in WAR STORIES, his knife-fighting training when he was the Army. His instructor's advice? "Run like hell!"

Which strikes me as sound doctrine. Get out of the way, and let your buddies take the foeman down with supersonic lead.

I used to drink with the Gurkhas when they were stationed near me. The most honourable, trustworthy, fearsome fighting men you could ever meet. And, in essence, a mercenary army for the UK.

Well, I've never seen one do THAT before

Tales are told, Peter, that all Britain's enemies needed to hear was, "The Gurkhas are coming!", and the enemies would be on the run.

But "mercenaries"? Wouldn't each man call himself "a British soldier"?
