Hope this isn't a spoiler question, but does anybody know what sword was used to make the Gaijin Masamune from Black Wind and By the Sword?

We know it was given to Masamune by Glaeken in the 14th century "to refashion his heavy dirk into a kodachi - a kind of short sword". In 1941, the Gaijin Masamune is in the possession of Matsuo Okumo.

We also know it can't be Glaeken's sword from The Keep since he uses it to "kill" Ra... the Adversary in Romania in 1941.

Can someone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance.

I think Glaeken had 2 swords. The fate of the hilt of the second sword is revealed in Nightworld (and ties together the Tomb and The Touch)

I assumed this was the blade from that second sword

Not sure if it is explicitly stated anywhere, so that is my guess

There are 2 swords...both made of the special material and then fashioned by the master sword maker.

OK, thanks for the info. Must read on!

So far I've read the RJs from The Tomb to By the Sword, The Keep and Black Wind. I just don't remember reading about the second sword yet, so lots more good stuff to come, yeah.

Thanks again.

If you've read The Tomb and skipped to By The Sword, you indeed do have some reading to do. Black Wind and BTS should answer some of your questions though.

Guess I should have said I've read all the RJs from The Tomb through By the Sword in chronological order.

Just re-read BTS after reading Black Wind to see if I could answer my own question. Glaeken states he gave Masamune a "short sword to refashion into something more graceful". So I guess there must have been 2 swords since it was a broadsword used in The Tomb. Just don't recall any mention of Glaeken's short sword in the books I've read so far - must've missed it.

I don't think you've missed it. If you did, I did too.

And welcome to the board Bubba.

SPOILER!

Part of it anyway. It seems that part of the second sword went into fashioning the Masamune Sword, and part of it went to the creation of the "necklaces."

SPOILER ALERT

I always figured the hilt made the necklaces. But it is a while since I read Nightworld

Maybe in Nightworld latest revision they won't need to fly to the Keep to find shards. They could use the Masamune blade in the reforging?

As I understand it, the hilt was made of gold and silver. The neklaces were made of iron.

Or all the metal available would be needed, including the Masamune sword.

(And when I first read NIGHTWORLD, I asked myself, "Why didn't they bring a metal detector along to help find the shards," but that's just me. Not everybody would think of that.)
