Then out spoke brave Horatius, the Captain of the Gate: "To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late; And how can man die better than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his Gods,"
"Well, John Henry said to the Cap'n, "A man ain't nuthin' but a man. But, before I let that steam drill beat me, gonna die with my hammer in my hand, Lawd, Lawd, gonna die with my hammer in my hand."

Sam, glad I could introduce another fan to the wonderful works of Jeremy Brett as Holmes. They are a true delight to watch. Even though I enjoy them all I think my ultimate favorites are:

The Second Stain
The Six Napoleans
The Sign of Four (2 hours)
The Solitary Cyclist
The Speckled Band

Don't forget the 2 hour "films" as well. I listed one already, but I believe there are 4 total. I'd have to get out my DVDs and check to be positive though.

I have 2 "films" - The Last Vampyre and The Hound of the Baskervilles. My favorites so far:

The Crooked Man
The Golden Pince-Nez (At a point near the end the "professor" is looking at Holmes with the most murderous visage I think I've ever seen. Incredible.)
The Dying Detective
The Greek Interpreter (Just because it's the first appearance of Mycroft!!)

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a good one too. You can see that the "effects" are outdated, but the story is still awesome.

The Greek Interpreter is a great one as well and the beginning where Holmes is explaining his brother Mycroft's abilities is fun to watch.

I also like The Dying Detective. Again, Brett does an amazing job as Holmes in this one and when he's yelling at the guy (can't remember his name) from the lawn after he has kicked out the woman and children is great because you think Holmes' is just mad, but he's really setting the guy up for what Holmes' is planning. A great episode, indeed.

Is there a specific order to watch the Brett episodes; you've got my curiousity piqued and it appears as though my library carries two collections: The Casebook & The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and they also have a feature film collection.

Well you can watch them in the order they were filmed (IIRC A Scandal in Bohemia was the first), but I'd have to look at my collection when I get home to see the real order.

If nothing else, just remember that The Final Problem comes BEFORE The Empty House. If you've read the stories you know why, but if not, make sure you watch those two in that order, not the other way around.

Thanks for the info; I suppose I could have looked at the release dates but...

No problem. Like any series though, they were filmed in a different order than release dates as well as I don't think they followed the order of the stories exactly. Brett also died before they were able to finish the entire series which is very unfortunate.

I did a quick look over at imdb and it looks like there were three seasons: The Adventures OF SH, The Casebook of SH, and The Memoirs of SH as well as a handful of movies. Each season seemed to have between 6 and 12 episodes, does that sound about right?

I believe there is The Return of SH as well. Like I said, when I get home tonight I can check because I have all of them, including the movies.

There should be 4 movies total:

The Sign of Four
The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Last Vampyre

and one more whose name is escaping me at the moment.
