I can see where the nightmares could come in. This book and premise brought out more of the little boy in me. I would be so fascinated by the prospects of a new world and race that I would probably be one of those people who volunteered to go underground.

As for nightmares for me, FPW's "Itsy Bitsy Spider" gave me more than any story I can think of. I had a nightmare right after reading it that there was a huge spider outside my bedroom window, and then, recently I took advantage of a day off and good weather and hiked up into a remote area for a day of fishing.

I got there a bit late and was working my way up the trail in the dark when I heard something big (probably, no,most likely a mule deer) smashing around in the trees behind me. I had the crazy thought "What if that was one of those big spiders from "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and it was tracking me in the dark?" Gave me freaking goose bumps and needless to say I didn't sleep all that well in my little one man tent that night. So unlike me.

I usually don't comment on books I didn't like but I really disliked this one. I could not connect with Long's style at all-much too wordy for my taste-so I'll be curious to hear your opinion on this one. It reminded me of Clive Barker who I don't care for either.

I find that interesting Scott. I didn't find Long wordy at all and that is something that will turn me off to an writer faster than anything. I agree with Barker, he is wordy, too much so for my taste. I found Long very easy to read, pounded through this book really fast.

It's never bad to have different view points on something like this though.

I can see where you might not have liked it, Scott. I LOVED the first few chapters, but it cooled almost immediately after that. At some point, it picked up, but it never again reached the absolute fabulousness of those first few chapters. It is long, it is flawed, it is not entirely satisfying throughout the entire book, the ending is rushed, but I still recommend it.

I believe my issue lays with an author's ability to create a mental picture for me, or maybe it is more fair to say my ability to intrepret what they're writing. If it comes easy for me, ala FPW, then chances are I'll like the book. If I have to struggle to picture what the author is writing then chances are I won't. I remember struggling mightily with The Descent.

Finished Long's The Descent the other night. Well, it was a good book, but like others have said it got somewhat wordy and slowed down a lot in the middle. I felt that so much was placed on the expeditions progress and then the ending was just thrown at us and we were expected to be like "Oh okay, I get it now." I was pretty disappointed with the way it ended.

Also, it took me about half of the novel to realize that all those chapters about hadals on the surface were just to show that they were in fact getting up to the surface and that they had nothing to do with the actual plot of the story. And the chapter with the young boy and the witch hadals...yeah, that could have been edited out completely. I felt sick after reading that.
