I am also a big fan of Joe R Lansdale's books, especially his characters Hap and Leonard. If you aren't familiar, look them up- the books are hilarious!

I know that they met Andrew Vachss' lawyer charcater Veil once, and I instantly thought about a crossover where they had an adventure with Jack. Just wondering if anyone else had ever considered this. They live in, and have their adventures, in Texas, which could mean a wild and wooly ride for our city bred fix-it man...

Texas as in modern day Texas?? You do realize that Texas is not really the wild west, right? Granted, we do have the Castle doctrine, but that limits shooting to just defending your home or car, not having duels out in the street.

Granted, small towns in Texas would seem deadly dull to someone from NY. Hell, they seem deadly dull to me unless I'm in the mood to be "out in the country". And believe me, you aren't really "out in the country". You're just in a small town.

Dalls is one of my favorite cities in the US. I visit several times a year. It is clean, has a great nightlife and plenty to do. It is a big city with a small city feel to it. And some of the nicest people I have met hail from Dallas.

I would move there in a heartbeat. It is only 6 hours from Little Rock, which is a small city.

Dallas does indeed feel small at times. I think a lot of that has to do with people's tendency to stick to their area of town. For example, I live and work in north Dallas. I know diddly squat about downtown. A lot of people I know are like that - they know their area of town really well and that's it.

Of course, there are some spots in the metroplex that might as well give up and become part of Dallas (Addison, Richardson, Plano). I know one area of Addison well enough (Beltline Road or "Restaurant Row"). But it's in an area that I would call Dallas.

Ha. I'm glad you said it before I did. My fathers family stems from Vernon, Tx going way WAY back. I've spent a good bit of time in Texas myself. I hate this misconception people have that we're just a bunch of rednecks.

Though I must say that Vernon is TINY. Do a Google image search sometime. It just shows fences and sky. lol

BTW, what Lansdale books are these? Are these the characters from Gils All Fright Diner?

Veil? You mean George Chesbro's character?

Chesbro's stories are the closest thing to RJ stories that I know of.....

The stories are set in modern day Texas, but Mr. Lansdale has populated his stories with ex-pro wrestler bikers, corrupt chili magnates, a hog raising private eye named Jim Bob Luke, and Hap's girlfriend is a nurse who set her abusive ex-husband's head on fire! All the books are laugh out loud funny, and full of shootouts, hand to hand, and even the occassional tornado.

I'm truly not familiar with George Chesbro, and I only have a passing familiarity with Mr. Vachss. I know Mr. Vachss does a lot of work with abused childern's charities, and mr. Lansdale gives his fiction a big thumbs up...

Speaking of George Chesbro, he died just a couple of weeks ago. I've been a big fan of his work since reading Bone back in 1990, and I highly recommend a number of his books. I've run Dangerous Dwarf, the George C. Chesbro website since 1999....

I hear that. Rednecks can be found all over the US, not just Texas. I run across quite a few misconceptions about Texas and don't really know why people persist in believing them. I'm close to deciding that people in general are just idiots. The only exceptions would be me and people I would call friends... milewinkgrin:
