Anya is the first Dog Lady we see eating, and she eats only what the plants discard: grains, nuts and fruits. She won’t eat leaves because she doesn’t want to hurt the plants.

And yet, she smokes a lot. Cigarettes are made with tobacco leaves.

So, what does exactly Anya smoke?

Cigarettes are not fruit. Can't eat 'em. So that's okay for her. :hand:

I would venture to say this about the topic of this thread;

[SPOILER]If Anya is a sort of "Mother Earth personified" then the very idea of her smoking would seem to be self destructive. Therefore I think it more likely that she is not "just" Mother Earth personified but is instead a metaphysical representation of Earth and humanity and thus she would potentially have all the gifts and vices of humans. That would explain the smoking. As for how she would justify smoking; it is not a far stretch to imagine her having a network of people that she would rely upon to provide her with her needs and if her needs included tobacco that was not sundered from the plants-causing them injury- then she would have access to it. She would have been around for quite some time after all.[/SPOILER]

Actually, its fitting that he gave her a Winston. Winstons are 100% natural. They have none of the additives of other cigarettes. The only ones that are somehow better are American Spirits. That's why they cost so damned much.

There IS one way around that little snafu.

If her plants loved her THAT much I doubt very much they'd have any problem with dropping her some leaves. Then again, at the rate she smoked it would have to be one hell of a big tobacco plant.[/SPOILER]

where does she buy them? who collects them? it must cost a fortune to harvest. And overripe tobacco leaves have to be brown tobacco?

Perhapse she has her own tabacco plant.

Aside from tobacco, grains, nuts, and fruits are future (baby?) plants. They're effectively the fetuses -- feti . . . feteese? -- of what would otherwise become next years plants.
