I'm becoming a big fan of writer/director Vincenzo Natali. His first film has become a cult classic and with a very small budget managed to create a claustrophobic thriller with Cube. (Forget the sequels... he had nothing to do with them.)

His third film is a comedic-mystery called Nothing. (I can't comment on his second feature, Cypher, as I've not seen it.) Again shot in a low budget style, Nothing is about two friends who want to disappear. One is a shut-in that is being threatened by a girl scout's mother because her daughter claims he tried to kiss her (he didn't), while the other is wanted by the FBI for embezzling money from his employer (it was his girlfriend of two weeks). And now the city has condemned their home that sits between two major highways.

At the tipping point when everyone is ganging up on them the world outside suddenly disappears. Except for their home and yard the world is nothing but white emptiness. They explore their surroundings, documenting their "discovery", as well as get on each others nerves.

Nothing is a fun film for people who like a mishmash of comedy, science fiction and mystery. It's well worth the rental.

Cube was brilliant, and Sorrel and I watched Cypher a few years ago and we enjoyed it, though it was a touch predictable and the ending was a little bit cheezy.

I'll defintiely keep my eyes peeled for this one. Smile

I accidentally dropped a load of worthless change in the street. I was going to just leave it there but a burly policeman lumbered towards me and said, "You'd better pick that up, son."

I hate coppers.

I saw this a couple years ago based off someone's recommendation on here. I think it was Kenji. I liked it a lot, but it may be one of those a guy likes that a woman doesn't like Bubba-Ho-Tep.

They passed an old woman who was just opening the door of a brown Cadillac. An old man was already sitting in the passenger seat. The car had a personalized plate with the letters “J-U-S-P-R-A-Y”.
“That stuff work?” Israel said to her.
“‘Scuse me?” the little old woman said, clutching her keys.
“The spray. Does it keep them away?”
“Keep who away?” She looked confused.
“I gotcha.” Israel gave her a conspiratorial wink.

No problem, Marc.

By the way, you said "Added it to my Netflix queue" in old thread. But it was three years ago! Big Grin

I had cancelled my Netflix for about a year so my queue was lost.

I was hoping this thread would be about what I thought it was going to be about. "Nothing" is brilliant in execution. Not only that, you can confuse your family with conversations like:

"What movie are we watching tonight?"
"Nothing."
"You didn't get a movie?"
"No, I got 'Nothing'".
"So you didn't get anything."
"Sure I got something. It's Nothing."

...And so on, and so forth.

Heh, it's funny you should say that, 'cuz I've been trying to brush up on my rudimentary Japanese lately. I just bought a few books to help me with memorizing the kanji.

Also... I had an old account here a few years ago under the name "Animagess"... Maybe you don't remember, but I do recall you!
