MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH

I saw it Friday afternoon. I had no expectations.
It was frighteningly mediocre. I want my money back.
I give this cinematic embarrassment ONE-HALF OF A CAN
out of five cans of diet cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper.

Non-Spoiler Breakdown:

Unfortunately, the failure of this film is one of simple Hollywood hubris.
They obviously rushed this puppy out WAY too quickly, before a decent
final draft was written, and put it into the hands of amateur filmmakers.
The script was TERRIBLE and the Directing and Editing were incompetent
and confusing at best. Hamhanded segues from one scene to the next
gave the appearance that they never actually finished principal photography,
and were missing several shots.

The cast is a seemingly inspired grouping of talented actors, but when
thrown into dragging scenes with weak dialogue backed up by a weaker
plot, there are just only so many nervous stares and bouts of dry wit that
Steve Carell (Maxwell Smart - Agent 86) can conjure up to save the
moment.

Anne Hathaway is a bit of a cipher as Agent 99, looking so much
younger than Carell that an obviously rushed and ridiculous
backstory was squeezed into the movie at the last minute in a
lame attempt to tone down the creepiness factor (and no, it doesn’t
work).

Terrence Stamp does a creditable job keeping a straight face as
Siegfried, the arch villain of C*H*A*O*S. Looking more than a little
bored, he delivers villainous pronouncements with all the gravitas that
has made his 'General Zod' (of Superman II fame) a cult badguy
among fanboys.

And what of the brilliant Alan Arkin, seemingly perfectly cast as
the Chief of C*O*N*T*R*O*L? While a few short moments of comic
wit occasionally arise, Arkin spends half the movie standing around
looking confused, perhaps wondering if this is how Peter Sellers
felt during his last few weeks working on the apocryphal and abyssmal
“The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu” shortly before his demise.

Ciao.

Maybe the tv show--which was big mucho fun to my 12-year old self--was an artifact of the time. And doesn't translate well to 2008. Dadburnit, if Hollywood =has= to remake 1960s tv shows, how about THE INVADERS?

I like original TV series.

I saw the trailer, but I couldn't see it as GET SMART. Because it's not funny.

When I was a kid, I saw THE INVADERS. I enjoyed it. Smile

And I saw remake version's THE INVADERS in '90s, but it was not good.

THE INVADERS: remake

Remake as the theatrical film? No thanks....

The wife and I LOVED it.

Laughed out loud.

It's an 88 magnum. It shoots through schools.

I just saw GET SMART and loved it, too. LOVED IT! I laughed my head off at the cone of silence. For whatever reason, that scene gave me the giggles big time. Oh my, I do love laughing that hard. Terence Stamp was a bit stiff, and I'm a big TS fan, so that was disappointing. I'm absolutely mad about Steve Carell, and he was delightful in this. I like Steve Carell so much I've even seen EVAN ALMIGHTY several times. Yes, that's a true fan 'cause EA ain't that great. I just enjoy Steve Carell that much.

Reading is freedom.
The mind soars, no earthly cares,
no limitations.

Years ago my mother used to say to me... "In this world, Elwood, you can be oh so smart or oh so pleasant."
Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.

Bruce and Lloyd Get Out of Control is actually pretty darned good. Not bust a gut funny, but at least its entertaining.

They really blew a chance to use Carrells comic gifts as the master of being oblivious to his own ineptness. They barely even used any of the catch phrases from the original series. And if you're gonna have Bill Murray do a cameo make it work watchin.

Not the actors faults Hollywood sucks

That and the swordfish coming through the windshield are worth watching this guilty pleasure for. I liked it more than Mike(and way more than I expected to), but he is right that it could have been excellent with a little more work on the script. If you're in a silly mood this movie will work well.

And I had to look up Anne Hathaway's age because she is absolutely gorgeous and at 26 she is old enough to where I don't feel like a sick old perv for saying so.

Perhaps with a small dose of The Evil Weed beforehand to help. I know that's what made the first Star Wars movie tolerable for me lo those several decades ago. (Note: all subsequent Star Wars movies I waited to see with commercial breaks, until La Esposa insisted I take her to see the one where whatsisname turns into Darth Vader). Sounds like that's the way to go with Get Smart.
