This is an incredible review by Ebert. I thought this movie sounded somewhat interesting, but now I feel compelled to see it.

Open Water / ***1/2 ®

Has anyone here seen this movie? .....And please no spoilers!

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

I saw Open Water today and really liked it. At times it has a documentary feel to it, giving it more of a sense of reality. I also know that it is all actual footage with no special effects, which also helps. It isn't a scary movie so much as a deeply disturbing movie. It didn't really make me afraid of water, but it did touch more core fears of desertion, loneliness, lack of control, and hopelessness. The very fact that it is so low-key is why I think it is so effective. You have no choice but begin to explore the true horror of the situation in your own mind. I would have to say the thing I liked the least was the few times that the movie cut back to the "mainland" and took you out of the perspective of the stranded couple; they didn't know what was happening outside of their own reality, so why should the audience?

Just watching the trailer of this movie sent shivers down my spine. I can't think of anything more terrifying.
Benchley was partly to blame but Spielberg has a lot to answer for regarding the fear 'Jaws' created. Even now, a couple of decades after that great line "We're gonna need a bigger boat" was uttered, there's still a residue of that terror lurking in the back of our minds. I suspect this movie is set to rekindle that spark and cause a whole new wave of beach dwellers lurking without intent to get their feet wet.
I love the look of it and will happily be paying to have the bejesus scared out of me.
Roll on 'Open Water IV'- Revenge of the Portuguese Man o' War.

If you go into the movie expecting a Jaws-type movie, you may be sorely disappointed. As I alluded to above, it isnt the creatures that are frightening but the situation itself. If you do see it, make sure to post your reaction/opinion.

I'm actually hoping it'll be more like Blair Witch in the sense that the imagined danger is more powerful than seeing 'the beast' itself. I often find that, in this type of movie (Jeepers Creepers, Dog Soldiers and the like) your imagination creates something far more fearful than what the special effects team can come up with. When you eventually see what everyone is supposed to be afraid of, it's usually an anticlimax. I hope who ever picks up (and actually makes) an RPJ movie bears this in mind when trying to embody the Otherness and its manifestations.
