webby Wrote:Ha! I've been thinking the same things (except for working current events into the RJ novels).

Every day as the economic news gets worse I think - man, Abe would be having a field day with the told-you-so's right now!

and - Jack's going to be a billionaire any day now the way things are going. Sure wish I had a stash of gold and silver coins!

and I wish the Peter LaNague for our times would appear so we could put an end to this insanity. I thought maybe Ron Paul was him, but no, RP turned out to be too kind and gentle. Maybe Rand Paul (the doc's son)?

and I also think FPW is one smart cookie for long ago having seen the possibility of what now seems to be our reality. Wink

President Winston Smith? :yikes:
Now that would be more true than real life!

Well, Webby, isn't Jack's horde valuable for its =numismatic= value, rather than just the worth as precious metal? That was my impression, anyway...:dontknow:

Another thing about his hoard is that it reminds me of Glaeken's belt.

tenebroust Wrote:The deal with this is that the way things look this decline will continue for some time. I was never thinking this could be a central part of any story but it is a cool side note to the RJ storyline. I think it is a great idea to keep the books from being "fixed" in time. While "dated" books can be very good reads, I'd say it is an exception rather than a rule.

Recessions rarely last very long, unless you have some idiot like FDR prolong them with wrong-headed economic policies. Come to think of it, any of the three stooges running for president may very well do just that. Maybe I'd better get over to Switzerland or Liechtenstein before it's too late!

As well it should these days. No, Ken's right. I was referring to the drug-legalizing president in DatM. [/SIZE]

Ah, if only. Legalizing drugs, going back to the Gold standard, abolishing the Fed, converting from an income tax to a per capita tax, dismantling the Welfare state, bringing our land forces back from Europe, none of those things will happen in our lifetimes.

I just finished DATM last week and the funny thing is when I first started reading it, I thought the president was off his rocker. But by the end of the story I didn't feel that way and in some respects agreed with what he had said. It was a good book and made you think. Keri

I'm telling you. Go to my mythical place where $12 rents you a beach bungalow for a year, and mahogany-skinned women fan you with palm fronds while serving you boat drinks...

And a sailboat. That'll fix 'em!
