Just finished reading "Gateways". Again. One of my favorite RJs. Anyhow, I had a question regarding something Anya said when she and Jack were talking. After the attempted hit by Devil, Jack went over to Anya's in search on answers. During their conversation regarding the Otherness and The Ally, Anya confirms that the Otherness has been involved in what's been happening to his father. She then mentions that "The Ally is involved here as well, though tenuously". So, my question is: How was the Ally involved in "Gateways"? Most everything that happened in Gateways was a direct result of either the Otherness or Anya. I didn't see any evidence of the Ally operating throughout the book. The "spear has no branches" philosophy applied by the Ally in later books doesn't seem to apply here as Devil, Semelee and the others behind the attacks on Tom seemed linked to the Otherness, not the Ally. So, would anyone like to take a stab at explaining in what capacity the Ally was involved in "Gateways"? Thanks!

Why vote for a lesser evil? I can think of none better than the great old one, who should return from his slumber to take over the U.S. government and make this country a whole hell of a lot better as the leader of our executive branch. Or destroy it and drive everyone insane, kill us all, or something really nasty! Remember, Cthulhu for President, why vote for the lesser of two evils? Wink

The Fact that Jack is in Flordia might be proof enough for some that the Ally had its grubby hands working in this

I agree, particularly the detail considering a dump truck hauling a cargo of special sand, taken from a certain sink-hole in a certain swamp, being hauled in a dump truck owned by a certain company, being shipped all the way back to a certain cement quarry in New York, that we find out in CrissCross was for a certain group of Dormentalists, in order to make obelisks for a certain, nefarious, Otherness purpose.

That's tenuous enough for me. Or, in the words of Detective Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon: "That's pretty $&%ing thin!"

Axioms Jack seems to live by (inadvertantly or not):

Why he does what he does: "I chose this life. I know what I'm doing. And on any given day, I could stop doing it. Today, however, isn't that day. And tomorrow won't be either." Bruce Wayne, Identity Crisis

On Rasalom: "Water's wet, the sky is blue...and good old Satan Claus, Jimmy...he's out there...and he's just gettin' stronger." Joe Hallenbeck, The Last Boyscout

Do you really want me to post back about your wifes cooking, or has this gone on long enough?Big Grin

And no, I haven't read that post yet. But I'm working on it.

Actually, I have no complaints about her cooking, or your taste in movie quotes...good luck with my disertation for the inaugural issue of Bluesman's Journal of Jack Studies.

My response last night was rushed and when read during the light of day may have seemed offensive.:o My response was meant from "Riggs" to "Murtaugh" dealing with the dialog from "Leathal Weapon".Smile
My apolagies to your wifes culinary prowess. I hope you never need salt.Wink

No need to apologize...I knew exactly where you were coming from with the quote...and if my wife's cooking was bad I would have encouraged you to carry right along. Thankfully she's a very good cook...but sometimes I still need salt. Wink

Actually, I think you guys may have misunderstood me. All of the above is completely Otherness driven. Everything in the book pointed to either Anya or The Otherness. I was referring to Anya's comments that "The Ally is involved here as well, though tenuously". I've haven't found anything to point to that so I thought someone may have a take on her comments. The sink hole, dump truck, Dormentalists, etc, etc is all part of the plan to get the world ready for Nightworld and totally Otherness related. If the Ally was involved it was in some capacity that I haven't noticed.
