Today I saw Zwartboek(aka:Black Book) in a theatre, and it was really amazing movie. "Zwartboek" was as good as "Schindler's List" and "The Pianist". The Main character is a Jewish woman.

The time is WW II. Rachel Steinn is a Jewish singer forced to flee her home. After she escaped, she sets up a new identity for herself to avoid being captured and killed by the Germans. Then Rachel joins the resistance and infiltrated to a Nazi stronghold for spy. But.....

I assure this is the best Verhoeven's movie. Oh, you don't like "Showgirl" or "Starship Troopers", so you don't like his movies? Forget about it! "Zwartboek" is not like them. This movie is about love and hate, faith and treachery, good and evil. It had not emotional moments like "Schindler's List" and "The Pianist", but the movie had some good suspense and thrilling moments and even a little bit of humor. But this is not entertainment movie. Some scenes were bloody gory and brutal and violent. Nevertheless I couldn't shut my eyes.

Carice van Houten as Rachel were excellent! For her you should check this movie. Her acting, her attractiveness, her singing, her everything.

Kenji, that is SO awesome that you got to see this!! I'm a HUGE Paul Verhoeven fan so I can't wait to see it. I'll have to wait for DVD though as I'm sure it won't play anywhere around here (it has limited release in the US). You lucky boy! Thanks so much for the review.

Here in Japan, it was limited release, too. So the theatre where I went was full of spectators!!!

Well, check this movie, it won't disappoint you.

Kenji's review is dead on. Black Book is the best movie I've seen in a long time and I don't think I've ever seen a film explore the gray area between right and wrong as succesfully as this one does. It feels more like a mystery than a war movie. This isn't a low budget film. The production value is equal or better than anything Hollywood has put out. Well worth seeing.

ccosborne, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this one. Smile

If you like this one, I also recommend this one. One of the best Rutger Hauer's movies.

Ah, Soldier of Orange. Never actually seen that one before. I'm gonna put it on the list. Thanks, Kenji.

Hard to believe no one else has given Black Book a try. It may be the best film I've seen this decade. Just a matter of time until it's discovered. It's too good not to be seen.
