I liked ET, but it got on my tit that if ET could fly, why didn't he fly back to his ship at the start of the movie?

And in the very first Lord of the Rings novel "The Fellowship of the Ring," why
didn't the lord of the eagles simply pick up Frodo, fly him directly to Mount
Doom in a day, where he could drop the ring into the volcano from directly
overhead? Surely with the aid of a dozen other divebombing giant eagles
they could have avoided the nine flying Nazgul (or however they're spelled).
But that would have ended the adventure in the first book and we can't
have that.
And if memory serves, I think Gandalf said something to the effect that the
lord of the eagles would not tolerate the ring in its presense...bit of a copout...

It must still be there. Just get the manifold and put it on the one that came from the future... Plus it would have been a neat time paradox.
You really only need three things: WD-40, Duct Tape, and a pointy stick. If it's supposed to move and doesn't, use the WD-40. If it moves and isn't supposed to, use the Duct Tape. If you want it to move and it doesn't want to, use the pointy stick. The rest of life is easy.

Well...maybe...but there =was= at least an explanation of sorts. I suppose things are played faster and looser in fantasy, as compared to sf. (And ET was a =fantasy= flick, right?)
