And in the very first Lord of the Rings novel "The Fellowship of the Ring," why
didn't the lord of the eagles simply pick up Frodo, fly him directly to Mount
Doom in a day, where he could drop the ring into the volcano from directly
overhead? Surely with the aid of a dozen other divebombing giant eagles
they could have avoided the nine flying Nazgul (or however they're spelled).
But that would have ended the adventure in the first book and we can't
have that.
And if memory serves, I think Gandalf said something to the effect that the
lord of the eagles would not tolerate the ring in its presense...bit of a copout...
