That's what I was thinking too. As when there's a nexus point in some sort of proximity or where there's a large heap of Otherness that could very well be a potential nexus point, there has always been one of The Lady.

This is a side note, but I totally agree! Once I was home alone while my husband was on a trip and I woke up to hear one of my cats peeling out on our laminate floors (louder than you'd think) to dash under the bed. I almost peed my pants in fearSad !!!! He is afraid of other people and I thought for sure I was about to get robbed or raped (or both:mad: ). I never figured out for sure what spooked him like that. It took me a little while to get up the guts to check it out but everything seemed fine!

I think it is of significance that Jack chose to take the box with the medals and photos in it from his Dad's "lost years" while in the war in Korea. I think this may provide the link to the "otherness" experience of his Dad if there was one. Jack says his Dad never talked about the war years so it is ripe for revelation.

Then again, he may have taken them as a rememberence to his father.

When my father died, I took his medals and commendations.

As we all know, The Lady had a strange pattern on their backs and how Rasalom always wounded them. Those marks were the maps of where the nexus points are, were they not? Perhaps each time the nexus points are activated and such, that is where the injuries come from.

Excellent observation.

The nexus points are injuries to the earth, and manifest themselves as injuries to the Ladies.

I've always thought the ladies showed up where ever there was a battle for an area. I thought they would look for an ally to help combat the Otherness. The lady in Florida with Jack's dad. The young lady on the dock with Tom in Bermuda. Of course with Jack in New York.

Wouldn't "the lady" be equally oppossed to the Ally as the Otherness? Is she just making a Faustian bargain in appearing to side with the Ally at times? Could "the lady" have a hidden agenda herself?

Hmmm....

Well The Lady is rather opposed to both of them, stating in, I think it was 'Gateways' that it would really be better if they could get both the Ally and the Otherness away from Earth so thus that indicates The Lady really doesn't like either of them. The only reason The Lady would stick somewhat to the Ally is that they would pay only benign neglect to Earth, leaving it as it is.

The Otherness, on the other hand, wants to bring Earth into a chaotic black darkness of suffering, which would in turn hurt Earth, and if The Lady are the avatar of earth and are to protect it... which would mean they would suffer. Going with the one that after it gets what it wants and would basically leave the earth alone after that gives The Lady a little more siding towards them.. even though they stated they'd rather not have either force there.

HOWEVER

Perhaps you are right. Perhaps The Lady do have some ulterior motive for their actions. I think that's a pretty cool concept to think about. I for one now am going to be reading more in depth to their actions (as I know I will re-read the books)

You could be right of course, it is a likely answer, and we really have no indication that Jack's Dad had any kind of contact with the otherness but....it is possible, especially when it was pointed out so openly that Dad didn't talk about those days, even though he was open about everything else, it seems there IS something there, what it is I don't know.....

I think the medals were more of just a reminder of his father. Reason his father didn't talk about those days is more than likely because of the fact he was a sniper and had to take out enemy on a more personal basis. Drudging up those memories can have a pretty bad impact on one's psyche.

I for one don't really think Tom Sr. had any encounters with the Otherness. Doesn't sound like Tom Sr. came across anything very unusual until the events in Gateways.

It is very possible that Jack's father survived an encounter with otherness in those days he didn't talk about. FPW let's us see that Dad was intelligent, resourceful, and open to accepting a impossible situations. After all Anya, one of the ladies with a dog, was Dad's friend.

We also don't know much about Jack's mother other than her tragic death. She could have had an otherness encounter that might be documented somewhere in Dad's belongings.
