I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but Miller's Crossing is also about the Irish mob, done by the Cohen brothers, and it's SPECTACULAR!! Cinematography, twists and turns, EXCELLENT acting (Gabriel Byrne, John Turtorro, Marcia Gay Hardin, Steve Buschemy, Jack Finney), make this one of my all-time favorite movies! Anyone else seen it? "I can't die in the woods, like a dumb animal...look into your heart, I'm begging you, look into your heart..."

I liked MILLER'S CROSSING, too, but it hasn't stayed with me. I saw it in the theater when it came out 17 years ago. It may be time to review it. It is a great cast. I think it was the first time I saw Marsha Gay Harding and I was very impressed. Gabriel Byrne was also terrific.

THE DEPARTED just grabbed me, though, in a way that few but Scorsese can do for me.

What I like about Miller's Crossing? I can watch it 20 times (and I've done so, which is extremely unusual for me), and I STILL pick up something that I've missed. This movie has SO much going on, it's like an all-you-can-eat buffet. When the music starts, and I see the terrific camera angles, I get goosebumps! I hope that makes you want to see it again...I think that I'm going to right now...for time umpteenth!

I forgot to say, I want to see Departed, but I NEVER go to movies! I usually wait for the DVD, unfortunately. This might be an exception.

I actually AM watching the movie, and before anyone makes me look like an idjit, it's Albert Finney, I think Jack was the Man (as in Chico and...).

I guess I'm in the minority here but I thought the film was good, not great. I give it a solid B. And definitely nowhere near Goodfella's. I thought the presence of Jack Nicholson detracted from the film. It was almost as if Scorcese gave Jack a long leash and let him ham it up too much and I thought that hurt the film.

Wahlberg was great and DeCaprio was phenomenal though. Matt Damon was merely good.

You are not alone, it's a fine movie but I don't put in the same class as Goodfellas. Good to great acting, a solid plot, and great production add up to worthwhile viewing, but not the best movie of the year. I felt that both guys should have been discovered long before they were.

As for the soundtrack, it was excellent with my favorite being "Let It Loose" by The Stones.

Congratulations to Martin Scorsese for finally winning his well deserved Oscar for directing and for best picture.

I finally watched The Departed last night and while it was a good film it suffered from the usual Scorsese running time. This film could easily have cut 30 minutes out and still been a terrific film.

Casino, The Aviator, The Gangs of the New York....His recent movies are long time.

But, after watching it, I don't feel Scorsese should have won Best Director and the film didn't deserve Best Picture. The Best Director win was more a pitty win in my opinion; everyone felt bad they never voted for him so they did it this time undeserved.
