Anyone see this remake yet? I've read reviews that say its pretty awful and really destroyed the original and its not scheduled to come to this post before I leave.

I watched the original for the first time the other night and granted it was the condensed 88 minute verison and not the full length 108 minute verison and I must say...I was a little let down. Perhaps I let all the talk from the die-hard internet fans raise my expectations too high, but for most of the movie I was watching it with this confused look on my face and I kept having to remind myself "It was made in 1973...perhaps it was good back then." The only really "good" thing about the movie was being able to listen to Chrisopher Lee's voice as he "preaches" to his followers. That guy has the coolest voice in the world.

Thoughts? Comments?

Oh and for those that have seen the original and like it, does anyone know what Sergeant Howie was saying at the end of the movie when he was in The Wicker Man? (Not trying to ruin this for anyone) To me it sounded like "Damien" and all the subtitles said was "Yelling indistinct" Any help?

And I can't get that Maypole song out of my head!!! AARRGGGHHHHHH!!!!

I saw the movie for the first time a couple years ago and really liked it. Yes, part of that was Brit Eklund's (body double's) "appearance," but I thought it was very original. It isn't a traditional "horror" movie, but more of a psychological thriller with a very fatalistic approach.

From what I've read of the new version, it appears to bash the viewer over the head with the symbolism and change and add some things. I'm not a big Nic Cage fan, so I was pessimistic about this the first time I saw a preview which appeared to add a whole irrelevent background story. I still might go see this remake, but I doubt it at this point; maybe DVD.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

I love the original. Brilliant movie. But no, it really isn't a "horror movie" per se. More of a psychological thriller. Definitely disturbing though.

I might catch the new version on DVD. My hopes are not high though. Compared to Christopher Lee, Ellen Burstyn just isn't even a little bit scary.

He screams "Failure, failure" according to the screen play

I love the original - have the directors cut on DVD

Apparently his final speech while in the burning wicker man was actually Sir Walter Raleighs speech as they took him to the block!!

Haven't seen remake yet - but I fear it will be a disapointment

of the Wicker Man the one with Edward Woodward? He was in Breaker Morant and the TV series The Equalizer. I think Saturday Night Live once made a pun on his name, calling him "Edward Woodward-ward." I thought he was singing a Church of England hymn "Nearer My God to Thee," while the Wicker Man was burning. Funny, the band played that tune on the Titanic just before it went down.

NewYorkJoe,

Yeah that's the one I'm talking about...with Edward Woodward. I've only watched it once so far (and unforunately I only have the 88 minute verison not the original 108 minute verison) but I'm going to watch it again because the more i think about it the more I actually realize that I did enjoy it.

Except that damn May Pole song....AARRRGGHHHHH!!!!!

Anyone see the remake yet?

Straw Dogs with Dustin Hoffman and Jenny Agutter. It's kind of a Deliverance, Yorkshire style. No May Pole song, tho! Big Grin

Hey, sig. A friend posted these on another site. They COMPLETELY reaffirm my decision not to see that movie.

I have NO idea if these contain spoilers, because this crap was not in the original (but I'll post the links instead of images just in case):

I think you're confusing Jenny Agutter with Susan George. But what do I know: I still believe that's no body double in the original Wicker Man.

P.S. The new version of Wicker Man is worth a DVD view if you have nothing better to do.

I watched this last night and hated it.........I was disappointed in the movie and myself for sitting through it.
