I dislike sports movies and Mark Wahlberg movies but this was a pretty good flick. It really captured the desperation of being poor. Awesome opening shot of Veterans stadium in the snow. Great soundtrack of 70's feel good music throughout the film (I'm going to check itunes to see if it's for sale). Wahlberg is pretty good as Papale and Kinnear is great as Dick Vermeil.

Haven't seen this yet but am tempted since this is such a cool story. May have to go out now and see it.

I'm torn. On the one hand, it looks like a good story, and I like Wahlburg, and Kinnear is great! On the other hand, I hate, loathe, despise, etc., all things Eagles, especially Veterans Stadium!!! :p

What would you say the greatest sports movies are, Jim? I'd say,
PRIDE OF THE YANKEES
ROCKY
THE LONGEST YARD
BRIAN'S SONG
FIELD OF DREAMS
(And let's get THE STRATTON STORY in there too)

Not bad, I'm sure you're referring to the Reynolds version of The Longest Yard.
I'd include:
Slap Shot
Eight Men Out
Raging Bull
Tin Cup
Coach Carter
Fast Break
Friday Night Lights
Rudy

I must add that I've never understood why Field of Dreams is such a beloved movie and I'm apparently the only one who thought Rocky was mediocre at best.

Of those, I've only seen

ROCKY
THE LONGEST YARD
BRIAN'S SONG
FIELD OF DREAMS

One glaring exception, imo, from your list is The Sandlot. Nothing brings back the joy of playing baseball (for me) like that movie does. Playing in the park with your friends. THAT is what it's all about!

Whalburg may be growing on me a little. Looking forward to The Departed.

I also hate the Iggles and their incredibly annoying, mean spirited fans (those people are harsh). The only regret I have from the Patriots championship two years ago is that they didn't beat the spread against Philly.

The movie is still good though.

The Sandlot will be one of the few sports movies that I will enjoy For-Ev-Er!
