Anyone else see this movie yet? I caught it in the theater and said then that Tim Robbins deserves an oscar, and he got it.

Anyway, I am just curious if anyone has read the book and how it compares to the movie. If the book is better than the movie, I would be really interested in reading it.

It's currently #5 in my NetFlix queue. I'll let you know what I think of the movie, but, no, I haven't read the book.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

In this case also, the book is better that the movie. It's a fantastic movie, but Lehane captures the sights and smells of the imagination perfectly in the book. I'd also recommend his latest: _Shutter Island_.

I read the book before I watched the movie. I thought the book was great. The movie was very good, and it tried to keep up with the book. I thought that Sean Penn was fabulous. He was quite what I pictured Jimmy looking like, but he played the part better than I ever expected.

The movie and the book are rather harsh. I found the movie harder to watch than the book was to read, though. I just felt so sorry for everybody.
