Over the weekend my husband and I bought a big TV and a home theater system that we installed (with much difficulty). So, now we're looking for movies to watch that are enhanced by the surround sound and subwoofer. We have the LOTR movies, which are awesome on the new TV, but if anyone has other suggestions, bring 'em on! We're really excited to break in the new system with some great, noisy movies. Suggestions appropriate for children are welcome too. We're having movie night next weekend with our neighbors and their kids (ages 4 and 11).

BTW, intalling everything so it actually works was one of the most difficult things we've done in a very long time. I was so pissed at one point I wanted to take everything back.

Two movies jump to mind for me. First, we watched Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on my dad's (then-) new TV and it actually knocked a painting off the wall.

Second, U-571 when they drop the depth charges. Wow!!! That subwoofer shook the whole house.

I'm sure there are more; I'll try to think of them. If you like musicals and concert videos, those are always good.

Enjoy your new entertainment system. It will prove to have been worth it.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

I enjoyed the Jurassic Park movies after I set up our home entertainment system. The TRex growls are awesome when cranked on surround sound.

Well, anything from Columbia/TriStar packaged as SuperBit should blow you away. High-res video with Dolby Digital and DTS sound. Some people will argue me on this one, but I recommend The Fifth Element. Titanic would be another good one (or anything by James Cameron for that matter). Amelie would be a third recommendation if you don't mind subtitles.

Well, honorable mention has to go to the Star Wars movies, especially Episode III, which for me is pretty much the definitive demo DVD right now for picture and sound.

Another good one for sound: Das Boot. The creaking of the submarine's hull all around you is nifty. Smile

Some good suggestions so far, I'll go for something completely different and suggest Almost Famous, DTS soundtrack of course.

The music is top notch and a key scene in a plane made me jump out of my seat the sound felt so real.

Not sure if it is playable to kids, some mild nudity, a smattering of bad language, nothing too bad but I imagine it would bore them stupid.

The Incredibles is a terrific film for everyone, the visuals will pop out of the screen at you and the sounds are amazing (especially the way the music comes up for the Flash on water scene).

Alien and Aliens. That might sound nuts, but they are very impressive on that kind of system.

How many vikings does it take to change a light bulb?

None. The light from the burning monastery is more than sufficient.

May the Norse be with you.

One of the best movies to push a sound system to its limits is TOP GUN. Big screen, surround sound, subwoofer... all pushed to the edge. Just make sure to crank it to 11.

Not sure about movies for kids, but I certainly understand what you mean about installation problems. From what I've seen over the past few years, the quality of technical writing has gone right down the drain. Whoever writes those installation instructions either can't communicate or they really don't understand it themselves.

Ken V.

P.S. The storm scenes and the final gunfight scene in Open Range should souind most impressive on your new system.

The Matrix kicks ass on a high-end sound system. You can hear every shell hitting the floor in the films big gun fights. IMPRESSIVE. Gladiator is also highly recommended, you can hear arrows slicing the air behind you. It really elevates the home theater experience.
