Saw "DOA" with Edmund O'Brien last night. Actually, he starred in the movie; I watched the movie alone. Anyway--this is one great movie of the film noir genre. I also watched "Detour", a film with the ultimate femme fatale. And Neville Brand played the psycho in DOA to the hilt. As much as I love Humphrey Bogart as Phillip Marlowe, I prefer Robert Mitchum's take on the role, but that old black and white style of the Bogart version works better for me because it distinguishes the noir in the film as much as the actors and actresses.
I know you have your classic color noir like "Chinatown" and "L.A. Confidential", but the b + w noir adds that touch of mystery and atmosphere. Also, the film locales become charactors in the films. How many times have you seen the Bradbury Building in classic movies or tv shows (Outer Limits: The Man with the Glass Hand--if memory serves me--starring Robert Culp). That building with its old style elevator adds charactor to any noir scene.
Tonight I'm watching the classics "The Maltese Falcon" and "Laura."
Do you have any film noir you can recommend to me. I keep finding new ones all the time (like Detour), but I'd love to find more.
Thanks ahead of time.
