I just saw it Thursday. I'd never seen an episode of Firefly, though I'll confess to being a big Whedon fan otherwise. I was really happy with Serenity. It had me in the first ten minutes, before the credits even came up. It seemed a lot smarter and edgier than most of the things I've seen lately. Is it unbelievably brilliant? Well, not quite; Joss Whedon's done many things I think were better. (The Buffy episode titled "The Body" is an astonishing piece of film-making, TV or not.) But it was really, really good, and I'll be happy to buy the DVD when it comes out. I'm also now intrigued to watch the series.
And that brings me to a question: Is the opening scene in the movie a flashback from before the series started, from a chronology standpoint? I finally caught an episode of Firefly on the Sci-Fi Channel this weekend, and the doctor and River were there, and there was talk about Jane selling them out. I take that to mean the series takes place after the opening scene of the movie but before the opening credits?
