Well, maybe you folks oversold it. I saw it the other night and enjoyed it, but wouldn't go back for a second look. (Okay, maybe on DVD.)

Loved the witty repartee though, even when it was inappropriate. My favorite:

Gov't killer to Mal: "You cannot make me angry.
Mal's girlfriend: "Just spend an hour with him."

Laughed out loud at that one.

I just saw it Thursday. I'd never seen an episode of Firefly, though I'll confess to being a big Whedon fan otherwise. I was really happy with Serenity. It had me in the first ten minutes, before the credits even came up. It seemed a lot smarter and edgier than most of the things I've seen lately. Is it unbelievably brilliant? Well, not quite; Joss Whedon's done many things I think were better. (The Buffy episode titled "The Body" is an astonishing piece of film-making, TV or not.) But it was really, really good, and I'll be happy to buy the DVD when it comes out. I'm also now intrigued to watch the series.

And that brings me to a question: Is the opening scene in the movie a flashback from before the series started, from a chronology standpoint? I finally caught an episode of Firefly on the Sci-Fi Channel this weekend, and the doctor and River were there, and there was talk about Jane selling them out. I take that to mean the series takes place after the opening scene of the movie but before the opening credits?

Yes. The movie had to take a bit of a revisionist shortcut in the beginning to set up the situation. River's conditioning was a mystery being unraveled in the series, which was cancelled before it was resolved. I don't think series-Simon had as much knowledge from the beginning, or could have been present in the facility where River was held.

I finally saw this and thought it was great. I was shocked by the one big "surprise" regarding one of the main characters, and disappointed not to learn more about another.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. ... The piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

sorry, looking to buy it myself. *grin* It's a keeper just like Dark Angel series.

Now if I could just figure out how to convince them to bring Birds Of Prey to dvd....

Scott Miller Wrote:Based on what I've read here about Firefly I would like to see the series. Unfortunately, none of the rental places carry it. So I'm wondering if any of you proud owners would be willing to loan me yours. I will gladly pay any postage and replace it should it get damaged. You can respond here or PM me. I would appreciate it and would be willing to loan anything of mine in return.

Considering what's been shown periodically in the series... there are times in which I'm not sure I should see it.

Simply because of one fact.

What happened to River thanks to the Alliance scientists and military, fits the definition of "abuse" in many senses.

It's definitely an adult oriented series.
